Does Mikey Garcia actually stand a chance against Spence at 147?

Post by James9753 »

After Garcia's impressive win over Robert Easter Jr, there has yet again been increasing talks of him jumping up to 147 to challenge Errol Spence. Personally, I believe Garcia is a fantastic fighter and within his own natural weight class can beat anybody. And I truly believe he could give Lomachenko his toughest fight to date and would have more than a fair chance of winning, especially after seeing some of the success that Linares had against Loma.

I just feel that fighting Spence would perhaps be a case of biting of more than Mikey can chew. Not only would he be jumping up two weight divisions at an unfamiliar weight for him giving away a natural size advantage, but would be up against an absolute animal in Spence. I'm just not too sure how Garcia wins on boxing IQ alone against the physical onslaught Spence would bring throughout 12 rounds. Maybe I'm wrong though and people think Garcia could pull a victory off? What are your thoughts?

To me it's the strangest high-profile call-out in some time. He must think he can win it, but jumpin' jack flash... It's super ballsy so as a fan I can't complain, but it's easy to imagine a Brook-Golovkin scenario on fight night.

No, but Garcia stands a MUCH better chance against ANOTHER world welter champ: 39-year-old Manny Pacquiao. A win over Pac would also give Mikey his 5TH world title and probably earn him MUCH more money because Pacman is a bigger draw than Spence, who is less well-known than Pac.

Pac is the biggest draw in the sport and it would be Garcia's first PPV. He is much more likely to beat the 5'5" Pacquiao and then can UNIFY the WW belts with Spence, which would also bring him more money fighting Spence as a champ in a unification bout than as a challenger with NO welter world title belt..

As much chance as Cotto stood against Martinez. :TU:

I remember when Maidana was supposed to kill Morales. When Leonard was on a suicide mission against Hagler. When one left hook from DLH was going to flatten Pacquiao.

It's funny how history is rewritten AFTER things happen. Luckily, this board saves many of those threads.

Maidana did win, and a lot of people thought Hagler did too. Martinez was injured and pushing 40. Spence is in his prime.

lol this guys a hoot, you want to look at past fight predictions ---> outcomes and you see its hugely stacked against big underdogs winning

but sh!t, miguel cotto beat martinez so mikeys obviously got this vs spence, not like your dealing with totally different pairs of boxers

Mikey is excellent and would rightfully be favourite against anyone 140 and under, other than Loma.

Spence is a big Welterweight and would be a step to far for Mikey.

I do feel that he could beat an older/smaller welterweight, like Pacman, but he should steer clear of the top boys at weltwrweight.

I wouldn't have said it was unimpressive no. Easter is no slouch and did have a huge height and reach advantage over Mikey which he overcame and dealt with well. I'm not saying it was the best victory ever but I think it would be wrong of me to say he didn't look good in that victory.

Spence is a big welter and could probably fight at 154 easily. Mikey is a very good fighter, but way too small to trouble Spence. I think he’d do well early, but Spence will break him down and stop him.

Point is neither of the so called weaker fighters got destroyed. Maidana didn't destroy Morales in 3 like everyone predicted, Hagler didn't walk through Leonard, and Martinez was in a higher P4P position in the time than Spence ever been.

He has a chance. Stylistically, Spence is Mikey's best top guy to fight. Mikey is an high-level, elite counterpuncher. He hasn't been looking like a monster because he's been fighting guys that refuse to trade with him.

It's funny that Mikey's power makes dudes want to box him instead of trading.

I'm always down to see a fighter dare to be great, and I think Mikey is one of the only guys that I think could get it done. :bag:

Thank you. It's more to boxing than just power and size. Mikey does have his advantages that may work for a smaller fighter like speed.

This.

I do not understand this at all. The only two things I can think are (i) he sees a flaw in Spence's game he thinks he can exploit, or (ii) he wants a big money, makeable, PPV fight now so he can cash out.

Loma makes more sense but I don't know the politics of boxing well enough to know how makeable that match is.

He's faster than Spence and he certainly has better defense overall. He's also more accurate than Spence.

For Spence to KO Mikey, he will have to be able to hit him clean which is not a given. And Spence's defense isn't that great.
