if dogboe is british does that mean lewis was canadian?

Post by jamamb »

?

i see a bunch of ppl calling for him in the brit top 30 thread, suddenly eager to claim him as british, but he was born in ghana, lived there till 7, boxed for ghana in olympics and has had 10 of 20 pro fights there (vs 1 in uk)

lenny moved to canada in his youth, learned to box there , and won gold for them in the olympics

and if dogboe is brit and ghanian, was lenny canadian and british?

Bit of a grey area but I personally believe your nationality is the country you were born regardless of how long you actually lived in your country of birth, ive not got strong opinions on it mind, nationality plays no part in your make up or psyche

Lennox was always a bit of a plastic Brit.
I was never completely comfortable claiming him. He's clearly an international guy - But he WAS born in London and lived there 'til he was 9, so I'll take him.

Dogboe isn't British end of.
Honorary South Londoner ? Yes
Qualifies for a British rating by residence ? Yes
But he doesn't consider himself British and neither should we.

Race has nothing to do with this - at least not from me.

Mo Farah is a British hero and Johanna Konta is a plastic wearing our flag.

It's a question about boxing rankings on an Internet forum, it's hardly an EDL meeting.

Lennox can be British if he wants, Dogboe can't.

Dunno where the post I just wrote went?

Anyway, basically it said that it seems madness that such things merit discussion in this day and age.
The highest profile example I can think of is a man who was qualified to represent Canada through residency, qualified to base his pro career in England through birth and freely admits that it was an entirely commercial decision, and seems to identify as Jamaican through heritage.

When he was boxing I would rate him in British and Canadian rankings, no issue. As the old saying goes, 'if he wins, he's British'.

I honestly didn't even realize Dogboe lived in England. I assumed he fought out of Ghana, and still lived there.

If he currently resides in England though I don't see any reason why he couldn't be ranked as a British Boxer, though he doesn't seem to identify himself as British.

I didn’t either, in 2011 Junior ABA’s he got to the finals and he won Sr ABA’s 2013. Boxed In the 2012 Olympics For Ghana. If he was British he would of boxed for Britain.. If he was NO good we wouldn’t even be discussing where he came from.

well that was a funny thing, because for a while he got like no talk here, and i started some threads on him shortly before he won the belt and hardly anyone cared, but now that hes a champ a bunch of ppl are now much more vocal and eager to claim him as british, which raises an interesting question about nationality
