WBSS Super Lightweight (1/4 Final): Ivan Baranchyk vs. Anthony Yigit - October 27, 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Belarus’ Ivan Baranchyk and Sweden’s Anthony Yigit are in an energized and excited state ahead of their Ali Trophy Super-Lightweight Quarter-Final at the U.N.O. Lakefront Arena in New Orleans, USA on October 27.

"If you step into the ring against Ivan Baranchyk, just know, you will never have an easy fight,” said 25-year-old Baranchyk (18-0, 11 KOs).

‘The Beast’ outlines big ambitions before the fight and intends to send a message to the other combatants in the 140 lbs edition of the World Boxing Super Series.

"I am a boxer with a warrior’s heart and mentality, and I will fight till the last drop of blood no matter what. On October 27, I will not only defeat Anthony Yigit, it will be an execution.”

“I am ready to fight and I will win this belt! I will show everyone that I am the best in the division.”

The vacant IBF World Super-Lightweight title will be contested between Baranchyk and Yigit in New Orleans on a doubleheader night that sees local hero Regis Prograis (United States) and Terry Flanagan (England) battle it out for WBC Super-Lightweight Diamond Title in the second Ali Trophy Quarter-Final.

27-year-old Anthony ‘Can You Dig it’ Yigit is eager to return to the ring after a succesful second defence of the EBU strap in december 2017, when he dominated former English Champion Joe Hughes and secured a decisive victory.

“I am looking forward to stepping into the ring again after almost a year of training hard and developing my skills,” said Yigit (21-0-1, 7 KOs).

“To fight on the WBSS and for the IBF world title is unreal! I'm so happy all those hours in the gym, the discipline outside the gym and all the blood, sweat and tears finally are giving results.”

The reigning European champion is in confident mood ahead of going to New Orleans, and he believes the timing is perfect in order to shine on the biggest stage of them all:

“I believe there couldn't have been a better time for me to fight at the world stage and I can’t wait to show all the boxing fans that I belong there!”

Tickets for Baranchyk vs Yigit at the U.N.O. Lakefront Arena in New Orleans on October 27, start from $30 (plus fees) and are on sale now at TicketMaster.com.

Lakefront Arena, New Orleans - For the vacant IBF junior welterweight world title, Ivan Baranchyk (19-0, 12 KOs) stopped Anthony Yigit (21-1-1, 7 KOs) after seven rounds action.

Baranchyk now advances in the World Boxing Super Series junior welterweight tournament. He will face the winner of next week's quarter-final bout between Josh Taylor and Ryan Martin.

Yigit has been out of the ring since December 2017, when he won a twelve round unanimous decision over Joe Hughes at Leicester Arena.
Baranchyk had a big win in March, when he battered and stopped Petr Petrov in eight rounds.

Baranchyk was fierce in the first two rounds, loading up and landing some very hard punches on Yigit. The left eye of Yigit was pretty bruised up. Yigit was willing to take the punches and trade shots with the bigger man.

They were trading some heavy blows in the third, with Baranchyk getting the better of the action. A close fourth and fifth, but Baranchyk was landing the harder blows. Yigit's left eye now had a cut at this point.

After several more bruising rounds, the left eye of Yigit was swollen shut and it was fully bruised up.

In the seventh round, Baranchyk lost a point for pulling Yigit down and hitting. The big puncher still had the clear advantage in the bout and wobbled Yigit in the closing seconds of the seventh.

The contest was stopped at the end of the seventh, due to the damage Yigit was taking and the state of his left eye.

Yigit fought back well indeed. Maybe even could have stood until the final bell, if not that nasty eye injury.

The venue for this event makes no sense whatsoever. Anyone really thinks people in Louisiana care about or even know Eastern European fighters? This should have been in Europe. Or if it's in the US, then somewhere on the east coast.

It was mostly due to Prograis.

I thought so but, I also though the co-main could have been held elsewhere.

Anyways I'm glad they're doing two fights per card, I was lobbying for that all last year about how the format sucked because they broke each fight into their own headline card. A big reason why no network outside Europe gave a shit about the tourny. Had they cut down the events by half (with 2 fights per card) they would have had far more TV coverage. I was following the tournament and even I stopped following it after half of the first stage, and then came back during the second half of the semis.

Would be better if they had one 140 and one 118 per card, instead of two fights from the same tourney. WBSS really needs to work on their planning and how to keep people interested to their overall product, not just one-off fights.

I wonder if they’ll have 2 semi final fights on 1 card now. I think they might aswel. There’s 3 different weight class tournaments. So why not.
