Boxer disqualified for being ahead of his time
Boxer disqualified for being ahead of his time
The boxer in the video was warned, penalized a point, and then disqualified within literally about one minute of the second round! I see guys doing this all the time for 12 rounds and it is considered a strategy these days. Run around in circles pawing with a few jabs and when he gets close, tie him up and wait for the ref to separate the clinch. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Boy boxing has changed. The worst case of clinching in a fight was Klitschko vs Povetkin.
My God that was unreal.
I thought he would of and should of been dqd

Re: Boxer disqualified for being ahead of his time
look how the referee violently ( and rudely)shoves Ingemar Johansson at 1:31 of the clip.
I think someone said a few years ago when this film was shown the ref was just sore because Anita Ekberg
had turned him down for a date the evening before.

Ingemar Johansen's behavior was considered so egregious at the time that they not only disqualified him and awarded his opponent the Olympic Gold medal, they publicly rebuked him as a disgrace to the Olympics and the sport of boxing and refused him the Silver medal,, leaving an empty spot on the podium. That does seem a bit harsh in my opinion.

I never knew that. I'm going to have to read up on itNewbie_71 wrote: ↑24 Sep 2018, 22:49 Ingemar Johansen's behavior was considered so egregious at the time that they not only disqualified him and awarded his opponent the Olympic Gold medal, they publicly rebuked him as a disgrace to the Olympics and the sport of boxing and refused him the Silver medal,, leaving an empty spot on the podium. Ingemar eventually got his silver medal. Sanders, sadly, turned pro and lost his life in a fight.
Re: Boxer disqualified for being ahead of his time
ed sanders looked strong as a bull, i wonder why he did so poorly (relative to his am career) as a pro

I bet Tommy Burns had wished that ref was in the ring with him and Jack Johnson back in Sydney Australia in 1908.
( and yes Tommy Burns was still alive during the Summer of 1952 ,he would turn 71 years old on June.17.1952 )

He wasn't even jabbing much, just spoiling. Is there not stricter rules on holding in the Ams?

Re: Boxer disqualified for being ahead of his time
There is a a little bit usually, but this was beyond ridiculous. That officiating was absurd. To be fair, the film was missing some parts so perhaps Johannson did something more blatant that we didn't see.
However, what he was warned about was unbelievable. One time he was several feet away and was warned for no reason at all. You seriously have to wonder if he was just grossly incompetent or was on the take.
As for Sanders, I think he was thrown to wolves way too early in his pro career. Tragic what happened to him.

Re: Boxer disqualified for being ahead of his time
He said afterwards his plan was to box defensively in the first 2 rounds, than go all out and by that surprise sanders and catch him in the third. It was the freakin final of the freakin olympic games ffs! How was he expecting to win like that. Holding is a clear foul, a boxer who refuses to engage is to be warned aswell, according to the rules, I don't see any wrongdoing by the ref. It just looks like johansson thought he had no chance trading punches with the stronger, taller, better boxer sanders, but still, if you make it to the olympic final at least try & give it a go.

But seriously, you would be hard pressed to find worse officiating. They were not even clinching when he stopped it. He never warned Sanders for rabbit punching either.

Hey,we've only seen the second round of the controversial Olympic bout.(as far as I can tell).
perhaps it was edited to make Ingemar Johansson look bad.

Yeah, can you imagine how the fans in addendence felt cheated when this fight was stopped even tho no one was hurt?
Maybe Henry Akinwandes plan was to tie-up Lewis for 10 rounds, get him into a false sense of confidence for any easy points win where he starts thinking of where heis gonna party after the fight, and
then "un-load on his ass in the last 2 rounds ?Because Lewis looked really tired there when the ref stopped it.

That fight must be the one Manny Steward showed Wladimir Klitschko on the first day of their partnership.

Whatever adjustments were made by Wladimir certainly seem to have been pretty effective given he was able to hold the title for 9 years.

Which says more about his competition than about him.

He definitely had a weak era. But you can only fight who is there at the time. He did that

Re: Boxer disqualified for being ahead of his time
Agree that you can only fight who is available. The last several years there simply was no one available. He should not be criticized for that. Nor should he get credit for it.
