Jimmy Clark
Jimmy Clark
How many times did Jimmy fight Michael Dokes, Marvin Stinson, Greg Page, and John Tate as an amateur?
Re: Jimmy Clark
this is what I dug up:
Dokes beat Clark at Nationals AAU (June 1975)
Dokes beat Clark (3-2) in the semifinal at Pan AM Trials (September 1975)
Dokes beat Tate via walkover (shoulder injury) in the finals at Pan AM Trials (September 1975)
Stinson had a 3-1 edge over Clark.
According to Stinson - "I beat him twice, at Upper Darby, once Silver GLloves and he beat me once in Trenton. (Philadelphia Daily News (May 1976). Stinson also beat Clark in the semifinals of the Olympic Trials (June '76).
Tate beat Stinson final U.S Olympic Trials in '76
Stinson beat Tate (5-0)(day 1) US Olympic Box-offs
Tate beat Stinson (5-0)(day 2) US Olympic Box-offs

Re: Jimmy Clark
I remember following Jimmy Clark's amateur career closely as a kid back when he was among the elite in the USA & he frequently fought on those USA vs The World amateur meets that were shown on ABC. As I recall Howard Cosell thought quite highly of him & he was convinced that he was going to be a top pro. So was I. My teenage self was certain that Clark was going to become a dominant heavyweight champ. Unfortunately for him he just didn't make a successful transition to the pro ranks for some reason. He seemed to have all the physical tools & the skillset to do so but he just made little progress as an unbeaten pro for a couple of years & then he was knocked out by a journeyman opponent & just faded from the scene. I don't know why he failed to live up to his promise. Maybe he stayed amateur a bit too long & was burnt out by the time he turned pro.
Re: Jimmy Clark
Probably plateaued in the amateurs. Plus other boxers like Frazier and Tubbs got better. Which is probably why he only got 1 National Golden Gloves title. Even Mitch Green beat him.sweetviolenturge wrote: ↑24 Dec 2018, 02:07 I remember following Jimmy Clark's amateur career closely as a kid back when he was among the elite in the USA & he frequently fought on those USA vs The World amateur meets that were shown on ABC.
