Jermell Charlo vs. Tony Harrison - December 22, 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Premier Boxing Champions has finalized a doubleheader for December 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The doubleheader, which is going to be televised on FOX, will feature WBC interim-middleweight champion Jermall Charlo taking on Willie Monroe Jr., while twin brother and WBC junior middleweight world champion Jermell Charlo will face Tony Harrison.

There will be a press conference held on Thursday, at Barclays, to officially announce the card - and the Charlo twins will flip a coin at the press conference to decide which of them will be featured as the "main event" of the card.

Yea I'm a "Superbad" Harrison fan from the Golden Gloves days & I think he's a live dog here, but his stamina issues are holding him back.

If he didn't have that problem there is a solid argument he could be undefeated today. That Hurd fight was neck & neck til he fell off. And I think he had a draw guaranteed & a win likely if he'd have just lasted the distance with Nelson.

Hopefully he's figured that all out, but Jermell Charlo is still gonna be a big ask for him cuz I think this is gonna be the best guy he's been in the ring with.

CHARLOS MISSED THEIR NOVEMBER DOPING TESTS

The WBC's Clean Boxing Program reported that the both Charlo brothers missed their drug tests on November 1st and have yet to submit to testing.

The testing program is run by VADA, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. Jermell Charlo is the WBC 154-pound champion, while twin brother Jermall is the WBC interim title holder at 160 pounds.

Of the 36 VADA tests ordered during November, only five boxers missed the tests. The other three boxers missing tests were Fabian Maidana, Patrick Teixera and Juan Jose Velasco.

The WBC report stated that missed tests are not adverse findings or positive tests. However, missed tests do such generate fines and potential penalties which could include suspension from WBC activity. All boxers are responsible for advising VADA of their housing and training locations at all times.

Turns out Jermall and Jermell did a coin toss to see who would be the main event. Jermall won.

I didn't write the score card, but it was a very close match. The decision was not a robbery

Charlo wasn't winning rounds wide, but Harrison was doing almost nothing at all to pull out a victory. Charlo was imposing a fight and edging it. The decision is pretty awful.

I think a good portion of those who are crying robbery about this fight may have been influenced by the rather biased commentary by Fox's team on the mic. They were going out of their way to praise everything positive that Charlo did while often ignoring what Harrison was doing well.
I think an argument can be made for Harrison winning five out of the first six rounds & while Charlo did better over the course of the second half he certainly didn't make a clean sweep of it. Charlo landed some good shots down the stretch & closed strong but he also did a lot of ineffectual lunging while Harrison continued to work his jab & land occasional counters.
In the end, I scored it a draw with each man winning six rounds. So, to me, it could have gone either way.

Charlo - Harrison

1. 10 - 9
2. 9 - 10
3. 10 - 9
4. 9 - 10
5. 9 - 10
6. 10 - 9
7. 10 - 9
8. 10 - 9
9. 9 - 10
10. 10 - 9
11. 10 - 9
12. 10 - 9

116 - 112 Charlo

I mean, I thought Harrison did well early. Less volume, but probably landed the crisper, cleaner shots over the first 5 rounds, but Charlo took control from the 6th onward, imo.

I can see Harrison taking 4 of the first 5, but that still only makes it 115-113 Charlo (there's also an argument to give the 2nd to Charlo though, which would make it 117-111). Maybe if there's another close round somewhere that could make it a draw. I don't see how Harrison wins 7 or 8 rounds in this fight. He had a nice jab in spells, and he made Charlo miss a bit, but rarely made him pay.

I'm calling robbery (I didn't watch the Fox feed, just for clarity).

I also watched without sound, I just decided to turn on music for a background. And I had Charlo winning.

I had Jermell Charlo winning this fight. I do struggle to show any empathy for those that wholeheartedly support a victory for Harrison.
