Bellew lost because

Post by rhino222 »

he gassed. simple as that. he did relatively well up to approx the end of the 4th....but then he gassed. he used so much energy up til then it was impossible for him to maintain it physically and mentally.

at the time of the stoppage Bellew was virtually defenseless. watch it back on video.

at no time during the fight did Usyk, in range, give Bellew one single opportinity to detonate that 'dirty' left hook.

well done Usyk. controlled but impressive performance and a devastating finish.

for the record my scorecard was as follows:

Round 1 Bellew 10 Usyk 9
Round 2 Bellew 10 Usyk 9
Round 3 Bellew 10 Usyk 10
Round 4 Bellew 9 Usyk 10
Round 5 Bellew 9 Usyk 10
Round 6 Bellew 9 Usyk 10
Round 7 Bellew 9 Usyk 10

at the time of the stoppage Usyk was leading 68-66

I am a qualified judge........... :TU:

Just watched it on mute. A lot of shots were blocked by Usyk, even in rounds 2 and 3, which seems to be agreed as TB rounds. I think Usyk was in control all the way (watching live I missed a lot of his little tricks - how he twisted the elbow in to deflect shots, moved head a fraction, cut off the ring etc) and he made TB work hard all the way.

Watching again, with mute and slowing down, rewinding, etc, Usyk bossed that fight tbh

He lost because he was sharing the ring with a vastly superior fighter! Simple as that. Good effort but Usyk was in control for the most part and dispatched him beautifully.

Bellew lost because Uysk had the most obvious and perfect game plan. Make the older, less active guy work hard. Make him miss, conserve your energy. Then as soon as Bellew took his foot off the gas, punish him.
I do give credit to Bellew for being the best he could be- albiet for only 3 rounds, and for taking the fight in the first place when he could have sourced a softer option for his last fight.. Also his chin deserves a mention, he shipped at least 4 hard flush left hands before the end.
He was never going to win, but he did give it a good honest British try.

it reminded me slightly of McGregor v Mayweather

lot of bluster, but Uysk always in control, letting him gas, then stepped it up

I never go with the commentators on sky, in fact I argue outloud with there bias commentary (although paulie was honest), rest are just on payroll

Watching Usyk fights on 0.5x speed you can see what he's doing. The blocking, the head movement, the feints and then you see him throw a shot and realize he was drawing the lead. Or the instinctive slip and countering with a 1-2 or a 2-1. His body shots, his resets. He is a master at work in there.

Similar to MayGregor for sure.
The underdogs did really well to hang with the masters. They even managed to be a round or so up, but the effort - mental as much as physical - was unsustainable.
As soon as it went, both fell apart very quickly.

Hands up, live I missed some of it and was actually not overly impressed. Guilty of commentator influence, which I am normally immune to.

Like Khan and Brook before him, he suffered a straightforward defeat to a superior boxer, and trousered a few million quid whilst doing it.

Yeah.
Give him his dues though.
In this age of ducking and diving, boxers looking for the soft option to a belt, going out fighting the best in the world is pretty gutsy.

yes, hats off to bellew. he chose the best as his last opponent and went out on his shield after a couple of very good accounts of himself v a faded Haye. Plus of course his world crown victory at Goodison.

many a time though, Bellew has failed to shine despite promising to deliver...........Chilumba etc

tbh this wasnt so much different from some of usyks previous fights

for such a long career in short am and wsb fights, he is a true 12 round fighter who takes it slow early on and then takes over and ends very strong

i thought he lost the first 3 to hunter, 3 of the first 4 to briedis, 2 of first 3 to mchunu etc......but to me he always seemed like he was working on a long game plan and sure enough, like vs bellew, he ended up winning descively (personally i thought breidis was a comfortable win even though the judges had it closer)

also, i had him winning everything after 3 vs bellew, it was hardly like bellew put up some class boxing round after round and then just tired out, usyk was starting to work him out like he has everyone else

Good post. Been saying this all along.

Most spectators were fooled by 1. Absurd bias cheerleading commentary & 2. Screaming crowd.

In reality, Usyk won every round.

Bellew's tactics from the off were that of a desperate fighter who knew he could not win. He reverted to a version of the rope-a-dope where the plan was to try and coax Usyk in - then take the Marquez approach of planting his feet and swinging hard hooks with Usyk, in the hope something would stick. But Usyk was far too smart for that game plan. He caught many of those hard shots on gloves/arms while rolling with them, or driving his own jab home. He set a pace that forced Bellew to throw alot more hard counters than he would have cared to throw. Usyks footwork constantly pressured Bellew back but the big man is so light on his feet he popped back out of range when needed. Applying criteria of effect aggression, Usyks tactics in this fight are textbook. His agression was incredibly effective, he faught his fight.

In reality Usyk's tactics, pressure and workrate meant he had ground the life out of Bellew by r6 or 7 without really having to go through the gears or overly exert himself with huge haymakers of his own. Bellew was gassed and became a sitting duck. The towel should have came in but there was an element of letting Bellew go out on his shield given all his bravado over the years. The comparisons of Usyk to Calzaghe are well founded imo, he's an awesome operator and the best of Usyk is still to come.

i watched w/o sound live and still gave bellew 2 and 3, it wasnt really because he did anything all that great , more so that usyk early going seemed to be having a look more then anything, as is his way often. he would come forward but not really throw much, more like he was measuring bellew over, trying to see how he would react to feint, movements, etc. whereas bellew committed more to his single shots and did land some. usyk never really looked bothered even early on though and one got the sense that it was just part of usyks longer game to take over. there are lots of great fighters who regularly lose early rounds but you just know that its not really a big deal.

i thought usyk started to get to work more seriously with offense in the 4th and i gave him everything from there. when the tide turns in usyks favor it basically never goes back because hes in better condition then all his opponents. tbh, i thought mchael hunter and briedis did better then bellew

one thing i did like about bellew was him taking the back foot though, i have watched lots of usyk going back to the ams and hes defo not quite as tight and gets hit more when hes the one pressing. its when he boxes back foot that i think he looks at his best.

usyk top grade engine by the way, has outlasted all the top cruiser pretty much and these guys didnt exactly have poor stamina. hes every bit as strong as froch was in that way

He's stepped up to fight a "world" champion 3 times. He lost to Cleverly in his hometown and the other 2 times got knocked out.

To be fair, it’s very difficult to look good against Chilemba, even prime Kovalev looked poor against him.

My view on it was he was trying to hard early on to land the k.o blow but usyk is a top top boxer who has probably been hit harder in career than bellew hits. Usyk was just too fit too clever and a very very talented fighter. Bellew can hold his head up high, the name of the card was he who dares and bellew dared but it didnt pay off,for the past 12 months outside of joshua, bellew has been the face of british boxing really.

Bellew was beat by usyks very cute and clever game plan 👌 The little things Usyk did made all the difference

its not the lack of looking good, its the lack of actually delivering what you have promised to deliver verbally before the fight.

Cleverly in the rematch and Haye in both.
