Press Release YVON DURELLE - THE FIGHT OF DECEMBER 10 1958: BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – MONCTON, December 4 2018: To celebrate Yvon Durelle’s boxing championship match against Archie Moore, the Musée acadien de l’Université de Moncton is organizing a temporary exhibition. The opening will coincide with the day of the 60th anniversary of the championship-boxing match: Monday December 10 2018 at 5:00 pm (in the event of a storm, the opening will take place on December 11 at 5 pm). This exhibition will be on display until April 20 2019.

Yvon Durelle, born and raised in Baie-Sainte-Anne, N.B., was known in the boxing world as the Fighting Fisherman. In his professional career between 1948 and 1965, Durelle won 88 out of his 115 total fights, 49 of which were wins by knockout. In contrast to his “rough and tough” boxing reputation, Yvon was a gentle person by nature. People from Baie-Sainte-Anne who knew Yvon would call him “doux”, which means “gentle” in French.

On December 10 1958, the light-heavyweight boxing championship match against Archie Moore became one of the most memorable boxing matches in history. Despite it being a loss for Yvon Durelle, he became a Canadian legend, as he knocked Archie Moore down three times within the first round.

Visiting this exhibition will be an opportunity to revisit the moment that brought the entire Acadian community to a standstill. This exhibition will also provide the occasion to learn more about the Fighting Fisherman, including his hobbies and careers that succeeded his boxing career, his support and relaxation methods before and after boxing matches.

We thank our collaborating partners for this exhibition, the Centre d’études acadiennes Anselme- Chiasson, the Société historique acadienne and Place Resurgo Place.

For the occasion, Resurgo Place, located at 20 Mountain Road, has placed the telegram that Yvon Durelle received after his December 10 1958 match up for viewing. A unique and historically strong piece that will be on show until April 20th 2019.

The Centre d’études acadiennes Anselme-Chiasson (CEAAC) is home to a large collection of Acadian archives and documents covering many fields, including history, genealogy, ethnology, folklore and more. For more information, visit their Website: www.umoncton.ca/umcm-ceaac/accueil.
