Jack Dempsey?

Post by NYDominican »

On September 14, 1923, Jack Dempsey fought Luis Angel Firpo. Jack beat Luis by a 2nd round knockout.

In the first round, after Firpo had gone down seven times, Luis knocked Dempsey through the ropes. Newspapermen who were seated ringside helped Jack back into the ring. On the count of nine, Dempsey managed to stagger back into the ring. The newspapermen helping Jack back into the ring was a violation of the Rules of Boxing.

1. Had these newspapermen not helped Dempsey back into the ring, do you think that Jack Dempsey could have beaten the count?

The rule that a fighter has to go to a neutral corner when his opponent has been knocked down was in effect, but it was ignored in this fight. Each time Luis Firpo went to the canvas, Jack Dempsey stood over him, waiting. As Luis' hands and knees cleared the canvas and he attempted to rise, Jack would hit him again.

1. Had Firpo been able to stand up for a moment and clear his head, do you think that Luis could have beaten Jack Dempsey?

If so, why? If not, why not?

Please explain.

1. Yes, he was pushed out of the ring as much as he was knocked out of it. He wasn't out on his feet or anything, and considering it would've taken a 20 count before he were counted out due to being out of the ring, he undoubtedly would've beaten the count.

1. Hell no he wouldn't have beaten Jack Dempsey. Even getting the knockdown he got was a flukish kinda thing.

As for why. I mean it's not that complicated. Jack was WAY, WAY more talented than him. That's all there is to it.

There was no such thing as a 20 count at that time. If a boxer was knocked out of the ring, he had 10 seconds to get back in.
If he was pushed out, the referee would order him back in, but no count.

If Dempsery had lost that fight, there would have been a near immediate rematch where Dempsey would have almost certainly flattened him. It would have been a blemish on Jack's record. But I think he would have been the first fighter to regain the HW title.

Absolutely fascinating. Turns out Jack was low on money and came back briefly to beat up a couple of wrestlers before hanging them up for good.
