Dempsey-Firpo Program

Post by APerno »

If you look closely at the top of page two you will see that Gene Tunney was suppose to fight Leo Gates over 12 rounds in the preliminary, instead Gates lost on PTS to Bartley Madden over 12 rounds. I wonder what happened to Tunney.

The rest of the card went off as advertised. I wonder if the Burkes were brothers.

There was also an unannounced four rounder between Charley Nashert (50-10-9) vs. Frank Koebele (1-1-0).

Looking at their records, it seems a bit of dirty trick to play on the very inexperienced Koebele, I guess Tex Rickard had a dark sense of humor.

Koebele was knocked down in the first round, and was twice saved by the bell. New York Times (Boxrec)

They refer to the minute rest between rounds as an "intermission" -- I have never heard that before.

Back in those days a minute was quite a bit longer. You know before the internet changed everything to digital.

So in between rounds you could grab a beer, a hot dog etc. The seventh round stretch was popular as well.....(when not referring to a KO in that round.)

They'd even have musical acts in between rounds.

Just like the dollar, a minute aint what it used to be.

It worked against Dempsey in a later fight though.....long count and all.
