Gary Russell Jr's inactivity

Post by chuck9788 »

Why does Gary Russell Jr (29-1, 17 KO's) only fight once a year? Why does the WBC allow him to keep the belt and not defend it? Russell Jr promised the fans that he'd fight more actively .... (that was last May when he said that).

He’s not keen on fighting, he seems to think he’s this marquee name who’s earned his stripes and some ridiculous payday. Unsurprisingly, the market has decided he hasn’t. I’m sure he’s doing ok financially under Haymon though regardless.

last I heard he said he’s still waiting on the proper financial package to lure him back into the ring.

Yes, Russell had said in the past that he only fights if the bout makes sense to him financially.

A guy who's not afraid to admit that he's a businessman first, a boxer second.

I heard a long time ago he had bad hands. He probably has to "ration" the use of his hands with limited fights, the other part is he probably makes enough money that he doesn't have to take risks. Makes for a good health situation for him for the time being but doesn't make for much of a legacy.
