Mayweather vs Margarito in 7/2008?
Curious about your opinions.
Floyd beat Hatton in 12/07
Margarito beat Kermit Cintron on 4/08
How would the Margarito who faced Cotto in 7/08 have done against the post Hatton Floyd?

12-0 Floyd.
Re: Mayweather vs Margarito in 7/2008?
And the punch stats would be more lopsided than that!
Re: Mayweather vs Margarito in 7/2008?
Corales 2.0 but without the knockdowns.

Is this Margarito with or without the plasters? I think Margarito with the plasters even missing and hitting Floyd on his arms would be an interesting 2nd half.

Floyd would have dominated this hand-wrap hardening cheater. I was saying that even before the dirty cheat got exposed for his cheating!!Onekrazyrican wrote: ↑21 Feb 2019, 17:31 Curious about your opinions.

I liked Margarito.
A rough guy. Typical tough Tijuana fighter.
But he didn't have the speed or mobility to deal with Mayweather.
Tony would be a step-and-a-half behind Floyd all night.
Mayweather by lopsided decision.

Is this the same Marg who as a 21 yr old kid BTFO of the powerfully mobile future middle champ? The same Marg consecutively Ring ranked for over a decade? The same Marg who only fought in opponent/commish approved gloves? As all his opponents did too? The same Marg who never asked for a TUE two weeks after a controversial fight like his rival, TUE 50-0 did?
Is this the same TUE that turned down a career high Marg purse double his previous best to fight some scrub for scraps?
Yup, them and their perfect zero hero coming together again for some Big Boy mucky-muck!

120-108 for Mayweather Jr.
These two boxers could have fought each other every day, as well as twice on Sundays, during 2007 & 2008, with Mayweather Jr. winning all 834 fights.

I don't think the concrete he used to wear at the time would've helped him catch Mayweather

It would have been exactly like the baldomir fight.
Re: Mayweather vs Margarito in 7/2008?
Are you referring to Floyd Mayweather’s use of an IV, which was simply a publicity stunt orchestrated by HBO to try to undermine a PPV event being covered by their fiercest rival Showtime? It was proven that there was no truth in Thomas Hauser's article.BroughtonRulesRefuge wrote: ↑22 Feb 2019, 07:24The same Marg who never asked for a TUE two weeks after a controversial fight like his rival, TUE 50-0 did?
Re: Mayweather vs Margarito in 7/2008?
Easy, easy fight for Floyd. In hindsight I'm actually happy that fight was never made. Hell I think it's a shame Margarito was even allowed to fight Mosley after getting caught stacking his wraps (although the beating he took was of epic proportions). Margarito should have been banned for life and fined heavily.

Re: Mayweather vs Margarito in 7/2008?
Yes, Im thinking same situation on that date and it would seem like a factor to consider. Cotto is not Floyd but he had done a decent defensive job against Mosley prior to that and was doing pretty well against Margarito defensively. The accumulation of punches from a guy who just kept coming and throwing regardless of where he landed really took a toll. Enhanced or not, Margarito's punches were definitively a thing.
Also, I don't think Floyd and his camp felt as confident about this match up. Don't get me wrong I appreciate Floyd's career decisions. Any boxer who claims he would have done differently if they were on the same situation probably doesn't understand how the game works.
That said, there was something about the welter division at 2008 that made him take off. It was like a war zone or a demolition derby.
This was happening from late 2007 until early 2009 at 147
Cotto-Mosley was great close fight.
Williams beats Margarito, upset by Quintana but then blasted him on a rematch
Margarito lost to Williams but we saw what he did to Cintron and Cotto.
Martinez kept making himself available for a good opportunity at 147
No way of knowing what would have happened but I tend to agree with Floyd's judgment that this was a very dangerous landscape. Him vs anyone of those at that time would seem more interesting than some think.
Re: Mayweather vs Margarito in 7/2008?
The was nothing scary about the welterweight division during 2008, which may have compelled Mayweather to retire briefly. Floyd eventually beat the biggest names that competed during that year, apart from Margarito.
Williams tasted defeat during 2008 and then very quickly moved to 154lbs.
Margarito lost the year prior. And would have been beaten by Mayweather, with ease.
Sergio Martinez was a light middleweight and never tried to face Floyd even when Money May made his ring return. The Argentine would have been beaten easily by Mayweather.
If Floyd decided against retiring in 2007, he would have engaged in a rematch with Oscar De a Hoya. None of the other guys would have been considered worthy opponents for Mayweather (based on those that Floyd never faced).

Mayweather by a landslide.
I would have loved to had seen Corrales move up and face Margarito. Or maybe a catch weight at 140. They were about the same height. Margarito most likely would have stopped Diego. But, it would have been a blast.
