Jamal James deserves a title shot

Post by chuck9788 »

WBA #3 welterweight Jamal “Shango” James (25-1, 12 KOs) scored a sixth round TKO last night over Janer Gonzalez (19-2-1, 15 KOs) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. James dropped Gonzalez in round six. Gonzalez didn’t come out for round seven.-fightnews

Jamal James' only pro blemish was to Yordenis Ugas by decision (one judge had it 96-94 for Ugas). Since then he's went on a nice 5-0 w/ 3 KO's run vs some pretty solid opposition. I'd like to see James face Keith Thurman next or maybe current #1 WBA ranked Alexander Besputin (12-0, 9 KO's).

He hasn’t beat anyone that would suggest he deserves a title shot. Needs a big win first

Not a relative. Haha, I'm a white guy living in Las Vegas!

I previously posted, let's put Jamal James up against # 1 ranked Besputin .... the winner get's a title shot. The current # 2 WBA ranked Jesse Vargas is not deserving of another title shot opportunity at this time.

I wouldn't say he deserves one, but he's probably the kinda seemingly mediocre opposition that would attract Keith Thurman at the moment. Given the difficult he had with Josesito Lopez I doubt he's too eager to rush back in with the cream of the crop yet so he'd probably be more than happy to get in there with James.

The way he can pack that place up, i think he will def end up getting a shot. He will have to be carefully matched till then.

Beast, I don't agree at all that James needs to be matched carefully. It's probably premature for him to expect a title shot, but he's proved himself to be at the top of the B's. What he deserves now is an A-level test.

For the last 3+ years they have matched James increasingly tough and he has passed every test except a short-notice UD loss to Yordenis Ugas, who has since established himself as a top 10 guy.

Jamal James isn’t going to receive an opportunity to fight for a world title anytime soon. There are too many fighters ahead of him in the title-shot queue. There’s no point in talking about this fellow until he’s beaten someone meaningful and earned mandatory challenger status.

Fair enough jamamb, you know your case and you state it well. I agree that James needs one more step up before a title fight. But to my eyes he looks like the real deal, and he's still improving.

Yeah he probably deserves a shot in a 5 belt world.

Does that include any available interim championship?

Somebody wrote it, bring on Jamal James vs Alexander Besputin, winner can get a title shot. Both are prospects, both did not deserve title shot now. Winner of that fight can be considered for a title shot maybe :box: :box: :box:

He'll get a title shot, but I think he's facing the hard road to the top right now. It's been said he's a humble fighter and I think that's true. Talking gets you noticed by the press and fans, but not everybody has that built into their character.

Broner's mouth has gotten him paid and in my opinion, kept him relevant. He's not in Pacman's league, and we saw him do pretty much nothing. However, it was a "high profile" PPV event. Mickey Garcia made him look confused and out of place the whole fight. Plus, maybe Garcia will stick around as a welterweight from now on too.

I don't know if James is ready for the belt holding welterweights. I hope that I'm wrong, as I like James quite a bit. I would just like to see his shot happen when he's totally ready for it and I don't know if he's ready for Thurman, Spence or the others.

Maybe Broner is a gatekeeper, so I'd want to see that fight first. If that fight happened, I think Broner would help by bringing some hype and attention, plus if James won he'd get his title shot from one of those guys...

James getting a title shot will likely depend on how hard his advisor, Haymon, wants to push him. Haymon has control of 4 of the 5 welterweight tittles. I don't think any of Haymon's A-side guys are looking to make an elective title defense against a 6'2 dangerous fighter that brings no additional money to the table.

His best opportunity will be to become the mandatory to the WBA regular title when it opens up. He's #3 right now and #2 Jesse Vargas looks like he's moving to 154. The regular title could theoretically come open later this year if Pacquiao fights either Keith Thurman or the Garcia/Spence winner. That looks like that will be fall at the earliest. The issue he may face is that the fighters behind him are #5 Kerman Lejarraga and #4 Egidijus Kavaliauskas. Both of them are taking on more high profile competition in March compared to what James has recently faced and could possibly pass James in the ranks based on that. It'll be interesting.

I'm curious to hear from the guys who think he's not ready for a title shot (either due to status in the division, skill, etc). Who would you match him with to get the proper test or recognition to secure the title shot?

If someone thinks he needs to prove anything else and go through a PBC gatekeeper the answer would be Luis Collazo or Josesito Lopez.
