Daniel Dubois vs Razvan Cojanu

Post by handsofstone »

This Friday on BT topping the bill Dubois against former world title challenger Cojanu, Dubois looked boring against Johnson although dominant, it was pretty uninspiring, Cojanu took an equally uninspiring Parker the distance, world title or not it was a sh1t,fair enough Cojanu might've took Gorman the distance but Dubois does hit hard, I think Dubois destroys Cojanu sharpish

I think its an experience thing, he ran out of ideas against Johnson but that will come with time - happy with how he and Gorman both are progressing!

I wonder if Dubois turned pro too early. Without knowing his story too well when I watch him I dont think a longer stint in the amateurs would have done him any harm at all.

Especially as FW doesnt get him out that often. I think his first 18 months as pro he could easily have racked up more than a dozen learning fights.

A very uninspiring bill for the return to the Albert Hall, even the Nicola Adams fight wasn't that interesting. A bit different from the days when FW had Marco Antonio Barrera there , admittedly demolishing Paul Lloyd in a mismatch

Is it true Gorman is next for Dubois?
That matchup will answer a lot of questions I have about both of them.

FW/whoever runs his Twitter account tweeted saying that they would fight later this year. Not 100% sure it'll happen that soon.

To be fair it doesn't really need to. Dubois is still so young and inexperienced. 9 fights in his first 2 years really isn't enough IMO. Tyson fought 9 times in 6 months after turning pro at a similar age. Different eras obviously but can't help but think that with the way Dubois was disposing of journeymen early on that he should have racked up 14/15 fights by now. He's only boxed 27 rounds and 10 of them were in his last fight in October.

3 fights last year is not good at all for a prospect at his stage. even some elite level fighters like usyk and fury fought the same number of times. munguia even fought 5 times.

Kiwi hit the nail - whoever runs FW's twitter account is a nonce always contradicting what he says in person!

I was pretty excited about Dubois, but the Johnson fight left some questions really. I know Johnson is a tough guy for any prospect, but given how in controll Dubois was, and his supposed hype and potential, you'd think someone who would go on to really challenge Joshua would he got him out of there.

Still he's young and has plenty of time to improve, and he sounds like a good, humble kid with his feet firmly on the ground.

As for Gorman, again it's hard to judge based on the calibre of opposition. He could be the next John McDermott as a solid domestic level fighter, or he could go on to world honours. I'm not convinced of the latter really.

Cojanu looked really good, as in the best I've ever seen him.
Hope he has been diligently hitting the gym. This fight might be quite interesting.

Dubois points seems the likely outcome but young Daniel does have heavy hands!

Dubois points I can see too

There's a lot of hype around Dubois and I can't see why atm tbh...the only thing going for him imo is he's so young & he's got bundles of time to come on :bag: will he come on strong though :maybe: I'm not so sure

Problem with this talk of being young is... as with Hughie Fury, they spend years mixing up with awful opposition and they don't progress. Be better to stay amatuer and fighter much much better level opposition, therefore honing those skills. Anyone can hit a punchbag for 7 years

ya good point, i see a lot of ppl who think that being young means they can just do years and years of punch bag opponents, but then by the time they reach a more average age for the division there hasnt been much progress. tbf, i think dub and gorman have started to be stepped up decently, though for dub he needs to be fighting more, 3 fights last year was too little for a prospect

His power is real. He's well-schooled.
That's enough for a bit of hype surely ?

At 21 I look to this fight to see what Dubois is adding to his arsenal. He still has much to learn and to add to his natural abilities (power; athleticism). I think this is a perfect matchup for the kid at this stage of his career. He has a lot of time to further develop before stepping up to the big boys.

tbf though whos he fought to show his power is legit to the point where it will be a big factor stepping up. most of the opponents have been guys stopped many times, barring johnson who never went down

Yep. You could fight Stavos the Bulgarian dustman and build a 150-0 (148KO) record like Wilder all you want but you could've also stayed amatuer and mixed with the next Usyk, Joyce, AJ etc at tournaments

To be fair, he pulled out of a fourth fight due to the flu. He is young; he shouldn't be rushed, but his handlers also need to use the time he has to the utmost benefit and not waste it. He needs to fight better competition and/or start fighting every two or three months.

Neither of you are wrong exactly, it's just that I LIKE a bit of hype.

I stand by the fact that his power is real. It certainly won't be what prevents him from getting to the top. The Kinpin was definitely bothered by it, before he figured DDD out and clowned him.

His power is only real against the guys he has faced. As you previously mentioned, he didn't get old Kev out of there in ten rounds, not even a KD. Ok, so only Milas and AJ have stopped old Kev, and Hrgovic buzzed him. But still, AJ did it to a less shopworn kingpin in 2... That's power worth mentioning. A lot, most, HW prospects that deserve the term prospect, KO most of their first 10-15 opponents. Parker being a perfect example. Let's revisit DD's power when he knocks out someone of note (not Cojanu) so we can have a realistic benchmark. If old Kev is a benchmark- and I believe he is- then DD's power is average so far for the division.
