Wilder to meet with DAZN

Post by oogiebe »

Deontay Wilder is said to be meeting with DAZN to discuss a deal. More to come.

As a DAZN subscriber I am excited to see a lot of names being thrown around as possibilities to join the organization.

Yet, I can't help but wonder if eventually this will lead to additional PPV charges for bigger fights. It would seem that at 10 bucks a month one of the following would have to be true.

1. Fighters would have to take less money.
2. Revenue would have to be increased.

I mean can anybody fathom getting a Wilder-Joshua or Canelo-GGG fight for the 10 dollar a month charge we currently pay?

Not trying to go negative here, just curious as to the business model they have in mind.

Lots of information, so sorry for the length of the post!

Mike Coppinger (the Ring)/Boxing Squared:

-Wilder went straight to DAZN (said that Al Haymon would still be with him to the end of his career).
-DiBella part of the discussions with DAZN.
-Eddie Hearn will NOT be involved in discussions per Wilder and his camp.
-John Skipper taking the lead in the negotiations for DAZN.
-Multi-fight Deal at least $20 Million per fight. No number of fights disclosed.
-Fight with AJ is part of the deal
-DiBella put this together knowing the relationship between Matchroom/DAZN and Joshua is key to make the fight.
-Wilder, "not an end to showtime relationship, just a pause"
-ESPN/Top Rank also made an offer to Wilder
-DAZN willing to cut out Hearn to make the deal
-No news if Breazeale fight would be PPV or not.

Wilder said last 24-48 hours many offers and he's interested. Announcement to be made soon. Haymon will still be involved with Wilder should the deal go forward. Wilder wants nothing to do with Eddie Hearn. The fight with Joshua "has to" happen, it will just take a while.

Sounds to me that all of this is designed to make the AJ/Wilder fight happen, and it sounds like late this year, or early 2020.

Hearn being cut out of the loop made me laugh my arse off.

They just wouldn’t have 2 big fights in the same month

The big news isn't Wilder talking to DAZN, the big news is Haymon talking to DAZN. That could affect many fighters and create many dream matchups.

Hearn got like 800 million or so from dazn. What concerns me is the lack of interest in the sport in America.

I am hearing the same thing you are. Wilder may be near equally rewarded as Joshua through this medium.

And they’re cutting Hearn out the conversation.

He usually the first around the table.

And less abrasive, as that is why Wilder refused to sit with him. He noted the insults about Finkel specifically.

I don't understand how Hearn can be cut out of this deal. He's Joshua's promoter and contracted to him, no?

I feel I am missing a layer of information here.

He's cut out of negotiations/talks with Wilder and DAZN. He's not the personal promoter of AJ; he represents the promotional company (really his father).

But that's the thing, I think he is the personal promoter of AJ.

He's on a fight by fight basis with Dilliant Whyte.

The chief exec at DAZN, Simon Denyer, is apparently worth more than $4BN and is also backed by Len Blavatnik, who himself is worth $17.9BN. I guess there would be other wealthy investors involved with DAZN too, as well as a certain amount of borrowing.

Any company harbouring ambitions to become the Netflix of sports is going to require billions of dollars’ worth of investment that will take several years to recoup and perhaps a decade before profits are being made on their massive expenditure.

This company will inevitably expect to make losses every year for several years whilst they’re building their customer-base.

I suspect that DAZN is making a bold gamble on investing in the future.

At the moment a streaming network is only really beneficial to the section of the public that has a smart TV. Without one, you're restricted to using a laptop, desktop, tablet etc. The attractive perspective of using things like Showtime, Sky, ESPN, BT, is that you can watch them from the comfort of your sofa.

I wouldn't use a streaming network, because I have no medium to watch them through (except my desktop computer). Maybe in 10 years time, everyone will have a smart TV and they'll be ahead of the curve?
