Oleksandr Gvozdyk vs Doudou Ngumbu

Post by handsofstone »

Gvozdyk defends his WBC Light Heavyweight title against the experienced Ngumbu this weekend live on B/Nation, Gvozdyk having his first fight since putting Stevenson in a coma to win the title, these fellas from the Eastern Block are cold as fvck and I doubt Stevenson's injuries will have too much effect on Gvozdyk's mindset

Ngumbu has wins over Kuziemski who Cleverly stopped in a world title defence and a win over Uzelkov and has plenty of notable losses, he's lost to Mikhalkin 3 times, Chilemba, Mohammadi and Fonfara, he's only ever been stopped by Mohammadi, I remember seeing the Fonfara fight which was a fun scrap from memory

Gvozdyk should deal with pretty straightforward, he can be a bit vulnerable though, Stevenson had him down but the ref made an arse of it and Karpency had him on his arse as well so he can switch off, he's a good all rounder though does the basics well and when he lands clean he'll hurt you

Gvozdyk wins via TKO in the 5th after Ngumbu pulls up with a calf injury, hadn't really got going, Gvozdyk was ahead but not in full swing, open again defensively, no real head movement and was hit by a couple of Ngumbu right hands, Ngumbu had an awkward unorthodox style which might've made things interesting if he could've got one of those right hands to register on Gvozdyk who has looked vulnerable in the past a couple of times, Ngumbu's problem was he was more interested in holding and spoiling and never looked like he had a proper plan except frustrate Gvozdyk

The injury came out of nowhere in the 5th, Ngumbu danced back out of danger and tore his right calf by all accounts, for some reason the ref allowed Ngumbu 5 minutes as if it was an accidental foul but no matter he was finished and Gvozdyk retains his title

I like Gvozdyk but Mgumbu is the type of opponent brought over here for our champs to defend against, if a UK fella had fought the fight Gvozdyk did he'd be getting pelters as would Ngumbu

Shame for Ngumbu to get such an injury in his biggest fight to date however as the rounds passed it had a feeling of inevitability with regards to Gvozdyk catching up with him & getting the stoppage. Ngumbu is very unorthodox but would have been walked down & punished eventually I'm sure.

Not sure why the referee was going to give him 5 minutes after he pulled up? Doesn't matter now anyway but still.

Ngumbu is about 40 years old and bounced around the ring like a terrified grasshopper for the duration of the fight, no wonder his calf gave out
Awful effort from a poor challenger.

I recorded this, is it worth me taking the time to watch? Judging by the comments I'm thinking not?!

Doudou Ngumbu suffered a torn ligament in his right calf Saturday night during his TKO loss to light heavyweight world titlist Oleksandr Gvozdyk, Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission executive director Greg Sirb told ESPN on Wednesday.

The fight was stopped in the fifth round when referee Eric Dali and the ring doctor determined Ngumbu was unable to continue because of the injury.

"We have him on 'indefinite medical suspension' pending clearance of calf muscle and Achilles heel," Sirb said. "I've seen guys twist their ankles real bad, but I've never seen a torn ligament like that.

"He was in the hospital for a couple of hours, they fitted him some type of boot," added Sirb, who says that Ngumbu has since flown back to France.

It was a rather bizarre ending to a fight that was for the most part uneventful for the first several rounds.

Sirb also said that he had no problems with the referee calling a halt to the action and taking a few minutes to figure things out.

"Nobody wants to see the fight end that way," said Sirb, "but I wanted to make sure the interpreter asked [Ngumbu] point blank if he could continue."
