Exhibition: Mikey Garcia vs. Erik Morales - June 23, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

ound for pound rated Mikey Garcia recently lost a unanimous points points decision to IBF welterweight world champion Errol Spence in Texas.

Garcia was moving up in two weight categories to be fair to him. He was always going to be up against it against Errol Spence looking back on the fight.

Perhaps the only surprise in the bout was the way Spence both technically and physically won the contest with ease.

Before the fight the narrative being peddled my many was that Garcia was a technically more savvy operator than Spence with the latter being the bigger man who would win the fight on size alone.

The truth was however that Spence turned out to be both the better boxer and the more physically superior fighter.

Speaking to Fight Hype Garcia has now confirmed his next opponent will be against none other than Erik Morales in an exhibition bout:

“We just got confirmation for a few things. Big announcement. May 18th I will be having another boxing show here at the Rancho Cucamonga Ranch (RC Sports Center). It will be a professional boxing show where it will be a four round exhibition with living boxing legend Erik Morales. He and I will be stepping inside the ring doing a four round exhibition for all you guys.”

Erik Morales will be almost 43 years of age by the time he steps foot into the ring for his exhibition bout against a man that is almost 11½ years younger than himself.

'El Terrible' would have been inactive for more than 6½ years and he’ll be trying to compete against a current pound-for-pounder that is also considered a dead-cert first-ballot future Hall-of-Famer.

So I wouldn’t expect this exhibition to be anything other than a fun, friendly, gentle, slow-motion affair, which is only being staged as a charity fundraiser.

I’m sure it’ll be fun to watch, but from a sporting perspective, it’s not an event that should be taken too seriously – it’s meaningless. I hope these guys can raise a lot of money though.

Definately.. This is what you call an exhibition.. Not the FMJ bullcrap we saw in Japan. :brick:

I'm sure they will raise a good amount. Just thought i'd let some boxing fans know.. Might want to attend. :TU:

It's good to know and I'm sure I'll try to watch YouTube clips of this exhibition, purely for the novelty factor, combined with a little bit of intrigue. If I lived anywhere near the venue, I'd probably attend.

It’ll be good to see these guys share the ring, even in a non-competitive capacity. :TU:

Would have been an entertaining, pick 'em fight when both were featherweights/junior lightweights.

I would have given the slight edge to Garcia. A bit faster, and Morales never truly carried his bantamweight power up to feather and beyond.

He carried it enough to beat prime Manny. Heck, he almost knocked out maidana.

I just know that once Morales moved up to featherweight, his knockouts were few.

And yes, he beat Pac. But he outboxed him. Fought a disciplined fight. Pacquiao was the puncher in that bout. Had Moralesin serious trouble in the 12th.

I don't really recall him coming anywhere near knocking out Maidana. An aging Morales gave an unexpectedly strong performance that night at 140, but coming close to a knockout I simply don't remember that.

I know that Morales' eye was grossly swollen and that he faded in the later rounds against the younger, stronger Maidana.

You should watch it again, took tremendous heart from Marcos to survive. As for disciplined against PAC, he out bawled him. In the 12th with the lead he slugged southpaw. In the first he went after him like he was shot out of a cannon. He was a very concise puncher and it carried with him, if anything, Mikey didn't have the same punch resistance at 26 & 30. But 99/100 that fight is going the distance.

Okay, I'll watch it again. See if I missed a near knockout.

But no, Morales fought a beautiful boxing fight against Pacquiao.

If he had brawled with the much faster Pac, he would have been knocked out.

As a matter of fact, the only time Morales deviated from his boxing strategy was in the final round.

I guess he wanted to close the show so he began exchanging and Pacquiao had Morales in deep trouble.

But he survived. I thought Morales won that fight convincingly 9-3. And he did it by thoroughly outboxing Pacquiao, who seemed to grow very discouraged when he was cut early.

The 5th Rd was amazing. He drilled him with a hook in the 8th or 9th that had maidana stumbling all over the ring. He fought PAC the same way he fought everyone.

Boxing superstar Mikey Garcia and boxing icon Erik Morales will meet in an exhibition bout titled ‘Legends Collide’ in Southern California for a good cause on June 23, 2019.

The exhibition will top a full fight-card presented by Mikey Garcia Promotions in support of injured fighter Izaac Colunga.

Colunga is a Robert Garcia Boxing Academy fighter. Colunga, (3-0, 2KO) a Southern California super-featherweight, who last fought on January 18, 2019 on the inaugural Mikey Garcia Promotions fight card in San Bernardino, California. Colunga scored a stoppage victory which netted him the Knockout of the Night bonus.

In March 2019, Colunga was shot in the spine while at a residence in Riverside California. The fighter remains at a rehabilitation facility in Denver, Colorado.

The 25 year old rising prospect was headed into a March bout on the weekend of the Mikey Garcia-Errol Spence fight-card. Colunga began to build some acclaim and was touted by Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya following the shooting.

Izaac’s aunt Leshielle is grateful for the event and appreciates the support given so far by the boxing community. “I think this is an amazing event on behalf of RGBA… It is definitely showing what a boxing family is all about. #izaacstrong!!!!”

‘Legends Collide’ will feature prospects Jose Vivas, Luis Coria, Manuel Flores, Alfredo Escarcega and David Ortiz in separate bouts.
A live performance will take place featuring Janet Uribe.
