Ken Buchanan vs Ismael Laguna 1
After only ever seeing the rematch and searching high and low for Buchanan's world title winning effort against Laguna in their 1st fight,, I stumbled upon it the other day and finally watched it earlier, great contest between 2 of the great Lightweights, both quality operators and fundamentaly near perfect

Crazy win for Kenny in the heat of Puerto Rico. The man was so aloof, so proud and so determined he pulled off a miracle.

When we talk about the best fighters to have come out of Britain, Buchanon is often sadly overlooked.

Very true. I was spitting feathers at how that dirty cheating young punk was allowed to ditch the Queensbury rules and steal Buchanan's title. I never suspected before the fight or even during, that we were witnessing the birth of another great career in Roberto Duran.

Its a travesty that it was ever called a TKO win for Duran and an even bigger one that Buchanan never got a rematchcandyslim wrote: ↑14 May 2019, 14:49 Very true. Buchanan was a great fighter without doubt but Duran was another level the most brutal savage man I’ve ever seen a truly great fighter was roberto Duranhandsofstone wrote: ↑14 May 2019, 18:04 Its a travesty that it was ever called a TKO win for Duran and an even bigger one that Buchanan never got a rematch

Yes admittedly it was a low blow and I felt really sorry for Buchanan at the time but at the end of the day the referee was responsible for allowing ithandsofstone wrote: ↑15 May 2019, 14:59 Definitely but you cant win a fight with an illegal punch, Buchanan deserved better
Re: Ken Buchanan vs Ismael Laguna 1
Buchanan was offered a rematch with Duran in Panama but he wanted it in New York again.
Re: Ken Buchanan vs Ismael Laguna 1
I 'm a Buchanan fan and believe he was Britain's best boxer since the second world war - but thats only my opinion.
I remember the Duran fight very well. My thoughts at the time haven't changed. Ken was up against a boxing legend, and gave a good performance but was losing. He DID receive a low blow, there's no doubt about that, but the referee gave him time to recover and my view is that Buchanan knowing he was behind, and simply up against the better fighter, decided to take the chance of having Duran disqualified. It backfired and Duran was given the fight. If Ken had been winning, or if the fight was closer I've no doubt he'd have continued.
All of us who've been involved in contact sports have suffered a blow between the legs. Its not pleasant !!! , but you walk around for a few minutes and the pain starts to go.

Re: Ken Buchanan vs Ismael Laguna 1
I have never had a problem with the ending. Kenny tried a sneaky right hand on the bell to end the 13th round but Duran slipped it and fired a right uppercut below the belt. That's what Duran was like back then. Referee John LoBianco missed the low blow and Kenny was dragged to his corner by his new trainer Gil Clancy. If Eddie Thomas had been in the corner as usual, Kenny would have probably fought on to lose on points but instead he stayed on his stool and forfeited the title. Kenny was a mile behind on points. He had not won more than three rounds on any card.

I have the same stance. I'm an unabashed Buchanan fan but felt he was using his brain (knowing he's behind, likely to get beaten up further) and was seeking a DQ but I do think if offered the chance to continue he would have. Instead they just waved it off. Buchanan was a rough, tough, prideful man and he hated losing the title that way.dalcumly wrote: ↑16 May 2019, 05:51 I 'm a Buchanan fan and believe he was Britain's best boxer since the second world war - but thats only my opinion.

It's a shame he never got the re-match just so he could have been at more peace with it. I don't think the result would be much different; he's simply not on Duran's level but he doesn't deserve a TKO on his record either.
I have some more Buchanan fights that don't seem to appear in many places. I'll post them up soon enough.

Re: Ken Buchanan vs Ismael Laguna 1
I read in the Christian Giudice "Hands Of Stone" Duran biography that Buchanan was pissing lots of blood after his fight with the Panamanian legend. Maybe "you take a few deep breaths and get on with it" doesn't apply to every low blow.... ![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)
Re: Ken Buchanan vs Ismael Laguna 1
We’ve just been shown a mythical fight, one of the very greatest wins ever by a British boxer, and all the talk is of the Duran low blow,
Phenomenal first win in awful conditions over the outstanding Laguna.

Leonard was pissing blood too. That's accumulated body shots, if it was a low blow you'd be bleeding on the outside of your dick.
Re: Ken Buchanan vs Ismael Laguna 1
Buchanan, Laguna and Duran’s great rival Esteban DeJesus are as good as a lightweight can be, short of the all time greats like Duran, Carlos Ortiz, etc.
