Wilfredo Gomez versus Ruben Olivares at 122 pounds

Post by goose 5 »

Does Olivares meet the same fate as Zarate and Pintor or can he win 4 pounds over his best weight.

No! No way! Wilfredo Gomez would have beaten him soundly, just like he did Ruben Olivares' countrymen Lupe Pintor and Carlos Zarate.

This is the perfect example of great big man beats great little man almost most of the time.

I think Olivares is being undersold here. Gomez is a great, great fighter don't get me wrong and his prime he was sublime but I think against Gomez, you'd also see Olivares in the type of form and shape he was in for fights like Rose, Castillo, Pimentel etc; His problem was that he perhaps didn't always take training that seriously but he was 52-0 with 50 KO's when he beat Rose. That's similar to what Gomez was doing and against similar opposition.

OIivares did better at featherweight than Gomez I feel. His power carried up better and he produced some great wins and performances past his best days.

It's a tough one and maybe it takes a trilogy but I'll take Olivares in his prime to get the better of a series. Maybe one fight, Gomez is under-trained and Olivares gets him, maybe there's one where Olivares has taken shortcuts and Gomez gets him but at their bests I'll take Olivares.
