Tough call.

Him beating Coetzee put him over with alot of people, but as soon as he got a portion of the title he lost it five months later to Weaver.

Then he lost to Berbick. And basically for the rest of his career ('81-'88) he fought journeymen. It's a bizarre career. He had so much talent and ability. He basically pissed it away.

I think Morrison certainly was mentally stronger and more determined to succeed than Tate. He certainly had the punching power to have taken him out.

Pre-Weaver, it'd of been a tough fight but I think maybe Morrison wins it on points in a pretty competitive match. Post-Weaver I think Morrison takes him out at any time.

Morrison by KO. Yeah, Tate is quite mysterious in the sense, that he could have the potential, which he didn't realise. But from what we've seen with him I can make a conclusion favouring Morrison. The fresher Tate would give Tommy a fight and Morrison would KO him later. The post-Weaver Tate would be KOed by Morrison early.

IMO Tommy would stop pre-Weaver Tate in 7-8 round
Post-Weaver Tate would got KO in 2-3 rounds.

John before Weaver wins a tough decision. The John after Weaver, gets stopped in five to six rounds.

Tate fought in a weak era. He wasn't enough to beat Morrison. Not by a long shot.

I agree with you the pre-Weaver fight version of "Big" John Tate would either outbox and counter him for either a decision in 15 rounds or pull a Mercer knockout on the Duke, but in the later rounds at least in 12. If the post-Weaver version of "Big" John Tate, the Duke may stop him for a 10th round stoppage.

That could happen, but being that Big John didn't really fight anybody after Berbick, it could end sooner. :TU: .
