Jermall Charlo Not Frustrated WBC Hasn't Mandated Canelo Fight

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Fourteen months after winning the WBC’s interim middleweight title, Jermall Charlo appears no closer to getting a shot at that sanctioning organization’s real 160-pound championship.

Gennadiy Golovkin owned the WBC middleweight title when Charlo knocked out Hugo Centeno Jr. in the second round of their April 2018 bout to win its interim championship. Canelo Alvarez won the WBC’s 160-pound championship from Golovkin in their rematch nine months ago.

Alvarez has won two fights since taking that title from Golovkin – once at super middleweight versus Rocky Fielding and once in a middleweight title unification fight against Daniel Jacobs.

“It’s definitely not frustrating,” said Charlo, who previously has stated his desire to fight Alvarez. “I’m living the best life I can possibly live right now. I’m young, I’m very healthy, I have my family, I have my closest friends, I have my trainer, Ronnie Shields. We’ll handle the situations as they come. Right now, we’re focused on Brandon Adams. I’m locked, I’m loaded, I’m ready. I’m ready to put on the best performance I have in me.”

The 29-year-old Charlo (28-2, 21 KOs) will defend what’s supposed to be a temporary title for a second time when he squares off against Adams (21-2, 13 KOs). Their scheduled 12-round, 160-pound title fight will headline Showtime’s tripleheader Saturday night from NRG Arena in Houston, Charlo’s hometown.

Showtime’s telecast will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT with a 12-round WBA featherweight eliminator that’ll match Mexico’s Eduardo Ramirez (22-1-3, 9 KOs) against the Dominican Republic’s Claudio Marrero (23-3, 17 KOs). In the following televised fight, Erickson Lubin (20-1, 15 KOs), of Orlando, Florida, will face France’s Zakaria Attou (29-6-2, 7 KOs) in a 12-round, 154-pound WBC elimination match.

Jermall Charlo has been the highest-ranked WBC 160lbs contender for two years, he has been asked to compete in three final eliminators and this weekend’s fight against Brandon Adams will be his third WBC interim title bout.

Assuming Canelo is permitted to retain ownership of his WBC world middleweight title whilst negotiating his next bout against the likes of Golovkin, Smith or Kovalev, then this means that Jermall Charlo would have been the mandatory challenger for at least 2½ years, without any imminent sign that he’ll be granted his well overdue opportunity to compete for the Mexican’s championship.

It doesn’t matter if you do or don’t like Jermall Charlo, the fact remains is that there is an obvious issue with the WBC’s conduct and their inconsistent application of their own rules.

Canelo or Golovkin would have never considered facing Jermall Charlo, unless the WBC had threatened to strip them of their title, but they've never been placed in that awkward situation.

And let’s face it, the Mexican is “bigger” than the belts. If Mauricio Sulaiman ever demonstrates the sheer audacity of trying to force the bout between Canelo and Charlo, Alvarez will inevitably dump his championship belt in the trash can, much akin to Riddick Bowe.

No genuine fan of the sport should applaud the WBC on the manner in which they dealt with the Dillian Whyte and Jermall Charlo situations.

Look happened to Jermall’s predecessor, Jorge Sebastian Heiland had retained ownership of the mandatory challenger status for the WBC 160lbs title for 2½ years, before being unfairly forced to compete in a final eliminator, which he subsequently lost to Charlo.

Old Korobov showed that Charlo ain't nothing special. I'd like to see Charlo fighting Derevianchenko. :box:

I don’t know about you, but I consider myself a genuine fan of the sport of boxing and I don’t like it when the WBC ignores their own rules in order to maximise their sanctioning fees, whilst allowing their mandatory or highest ranked title challengers to be deprived of their well-deserved shot at the championship for more than two years.

As I said it before. It needs more than a mandatory challenger spot to be in the position to fight Canelo. Charlo should prove himself and build up his profile. WBC is at Canelo's service.
