Canelo will not fight in September 2019
According to Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Alvarez, they have made the strategic decision to postpone their typical September fight. It's been claimed that their decision was made "in an effort to secure the right opponent and to do justice to the level of promotion required for a boxing star of his magnitude."
Though Canelo typically fights in May and September, it is not without precedent to fight later in the year as Canelo did fight in December of 2018 in Madison Square Garden when he knocked out Rocky Fielding for the WBA "regular" title at super middleweight.
Canelo's next fight will now take place later in 2019.
Canelo's team had been negotiating with the likes of WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, who is now scheduled to fight next month in Russia against mandatory challenger Anthony Yarde. Kovalev's team was unable to reach an agreement on the money for Canelo.
Offers were also sent to WBO champion Demetrius Andrade and WBO 154-pound champion Jaime Munguia - but streaming service DAZN was most interested in a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin, who recently made his debut with the streaming service - but Canelo had little to no interest in facing Golovkin for a third time, at least right now.
"As a Mexican, it's a responsibility and an honor to represent my country in both May and September," said Canelo.
"Those are my dates. However, as a world champion in multiple weight classes, I also have the responsibility of delivering the most exciting and competitive fights possible. That's why Golden Boy and my team have decided to postpone the date in order to do right by my fans by promoting the best fight possible and with the best opponent possible."

Could have fought 3 times this year.. chasing the wrong names and on top of that, DAZN was on his backside to fight GGG and Andrade.
He was chasing Kovalev. Whatever happened to Cal Smith?

Kovalev has known weaknesses Canelo can exploit the main one being not taking body shots well. Plus they would for sure insist on some kind of rehydration clause weakening Kova.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑17 Jul 2019, 13:17 Could have fought 3 times this year.. chasing the wrong names and on top of that, DAZN was on his backside to fight GGG and Andrade.

It became pretty obvious once July 15 had come and gone.

Canelo-Kovalev at the end of 2019, after the Russian demolishes Anthony Yarde.
Canelo-GGG III Cinco de Mayo 2020, after the Kazakh demolishes another “Vanes Martirosyan” “Steve Rolls” type overmatched opponent.
Canelo beats two veterans that are both close (as in two or three years away) from turning forty years of age.

Wants to become a 4 weight world champion fighting softer opposition. Let’s be honest. Kovalev is still good, but he’s not at his best anymore.boxing_rocks wrote: ↑17 Jul 2019, 13:26Kovalev has known weaknesses Canelo can exploit the main one being not taking body shots well. I still consider Canelo a 2 weight world champion.

This is pretty much in line with what I opined recently. That it would probably be Andrade or Canelo would give up the September date.
It wasn't mentioned in the article, but there have been stories in the past month that Canelo's surgically repaired knee was again giving him problems.
It probably played a role in the decision.

I am surprised and disappointed. DAZN guaranteed Canelo this massive amount of $350 MILLION for 11 fights over 5 years!! Will they end up regretting that move and will this make other networks LESS likely to bid so boldly?

Canelo Álvarez has signed the largest contract in the history of sport, agreeing a five-year, 11-fight deal worth at least $365m with streaming service DAZN.

He has had a niggling knee injury.
Do you guys think he has taken this time out to get it fixed?
His team would never admit any weaknesses, but there's been some leaks of him on crutches this year.

I really hope the wait it warranted. Either Golovkin, Kovalev or Callum Smith would appease my appetite.

Re: Canelo will not fight in September 2019
A third GGG fight doesn't interest me anymore, irrespective of location. Couldn't care less about a pointless Kovalev fight either and there's no chance that fight happens at 175. Callum Smith is not a draw in the UK and can't see Matchroom letting him loose elsewhere as at this stage it is highly unlikely he beats Canelo (although, in 2/3 fights time, who knows). As boring a spectacle as it would be, I think Andrade should be his next opponent.

Ha, seems the obvious answer is again the correct one.
First thing into my head was what I wrote here earlier, and turns out to have some potential truth
