Junior bantamweight world titlists Juan Francisco Estrada and Kal Yafai could meet to unify their belts Dec. 14, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn told ESPN on Tuesday. He promotes both fighters and there was talk that the unification fight might take place on the undercard of the Andy Ruiz Jr.-Anthony Joshua heavyweight title rematch Dec. 7 in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, but Hearn said that won’t be the case and that it likely would be on a card he's putting together a week later. Mexico’s Estrada, coming off a ninth-round knockout of Dewayne Beamon on Aug. 24, would be making his second defense. Yafai, of England, who cruised to a decision over mandatory challenger Norbelto Jimenez on June 29, would be making his fifth defense.

It looks as though WBC super flyweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada won’t be facing IBF champion Kal Yafai on the Andy Ruiz Jr.-Anthony Joshua II undercard, but the two are still poised to go at it. Both Zanfer and Eddie Hearn have confirmed that their respective sides are looking to put the fight together a week later on December 14th.

This date would mean some competition; Terence Crawford’s title defense against (presumably) Egidijus Kavaliauskas, which also includes Richard Commey vs. Teofimo Lopez, airs on ESPN that evening. I suppose they could hold it in the U.K. and avoid the timing conflict entirely, though.

Estrada (39-3, 26 KO) figures to be a considerable favorite; his 115-pound run has seen him beat the likes of Carlos Cuadras and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, while Yafai’s (26-0, 15 KO) best victory was likely his initial title-winning effort over Luis Concepcion. Still, it figures to at least be an entertaining clash, and with IBF champion Jerwin Ancajas off doing his own thing, this is among the top fights that can be made at 115 next to a clash between Estrada and WBO champ Kazuto Ioka.

Interesting but was wishing for Estrada v Sor Rungvisai rubber match to settle their excellent rivalry.

Yafai probably got the fight more due to connections than merit.

Boxing Scene has learned that plans for a pre-Super Bowl title fight grudge match between the pair of bitter junior lightweight rivals are no longer in place, although the bout still remains on course to happen at some point in the 1st quarter of 2020.

The bill will feature a junior bantamweight title unification clash between World champion Juan Francisco Estrada (40-3, 27KOs) of Mexico and England’s unbeaten titlist Kal Yafai (26-0, 15KOs). Also being discussed for the show is unbeaten middleweight titlist Demetrius Andrade (28-0, 17KOs) in a voluntary title defense versus Ireland’s Luke Keeler (17-2-1, 5KOs).

England’s Yafai (26-0, 15KOs) was due to face Mexico’s Juan Francisco Estrada (40-3, 27KOs) in a title unification bout atop a January 30 DAZN show as part of a massive Super Bowl weekend in Miami, Florida. The show goes on but without its original main event, as Estrada—the division’s lineal champion in addition to the alphabet title he claims—suffered a hand injury which will put him on the shelf until mid-spring.
