Davies v Chelli

Post by mickey1975 »

A good fight on BT this weekend. I remember watching an interview with Chelli’s dad who claimed he was the best super middleweight in Britain, at a time when Groves and DeGale held belts and Smith was just behind them....
My pal has sparred Kody and said he’s probably the best guy he’s ever sparred and another guy I know, tough journeyman Harry Matthews said he’s exceptional and the hardest nights work he’s ever had.
Anyway, I trust my guys opinion and think Davies will do a number on him!

TBH neither has really impressed me. From what I've seen of Davies he's shown nothing to suggest he's nearly as that good on fight night as that lofty praise he's got.

Still, looks a very competitively matched one, should be good. Chelli maybe stronger but sloppier, Davies a bit sharper but looks a bit pitter patter pillows.

Harry especially has been in with most and raves about him.

Fantastic match and already the second time Chelli has faced off against a touted unbeaten prospect and third time he's been prepared to risk his unbeaten record against opponents with winning records, plus he's already captured an Area title. All in less than 10 fights. Impressive !

He's clearly not one for messing about & ready to take on boxers who come to win.

Supposedly these sort of matches don't happen much "these days", but am I the only one who recognises these fights happening fairly frequently ?

Chelli isnt being done any favours by his promoter. Fair play to him for taking another tough assignment.

Bit surprised to hear Mathews rates him higher than the guys who actually KO’d him ..

I like the look of this match up. I have been following Davies for awhile - but have concerns he simply doesn’t punch anything hard enough to mix it with the good guys; that said I do not know enough about Chelli to know if he is that good.

Good match up.

I don’t think Harry has ever been knocked out. He’s been stopped or sat it out.... Davies dropped him in the last.

Ummm ... ok

So he goes 8 with a guy ... and is unable to complete 2 rnds with another guy ... yet says the guy he managed to go 8 ends with was better?

I just rewatched both fights. Germaine Brown Bashed him up more in less than 2 rnds I’d say.

To be honest, I don’t get along great with Harry, so I’m not biased towards him, but I know he’s been getting down about the journeyman role and don’t think he will be boxing too much longer. He’s a light middleweight really but likes to look good so won’t drop weight.

His fight with Kody looked more of a sparring session. Where as with Germsine he was in survival mode from very early.

I have watched a few Chelli fights last night, and my only concern is that he seems to gas quite early - whereas Davies is super fit.
But to even that up Chelli can still hit hard when he looks gassed and Davies doesn’t appear to have any kind of punch. Although to be fair to him he seems more focused on looking like a superstar than fighting like one.

Kody’s body transformation seems a talking point on Twitter. Hope he’s not come too far down.

Yes he looks ripped like a body builder. I think that’s part reason why he doesn’t seem to have much power in his punches .. maybe weight drained?

I also think he with the wrong trainer. As good as Rees most likely is as a trainer he is simply too short for Davies; Davies seems to give away his height advantage and even watching him on the bag he fights down. At the early stages of a career it’s made up of the journeymen; as you have said - a 5’9” lt-middle journeyman at alt-heavy is gonna fight differently than a 6ft prospect at lt-heavy.

Looking forward to this.

Leaning towards Davies on points simply because of his fitness ... so far Davies has not faced anyone who can punch anything so his chin is totally untested.

Not the best performance by either guy; to be fair to Chelli he was moving up a division and was considerably smaller than Davies.
Chelli will probably be best moving back down a division and building upon his recent area title. He is still very young and the loss will not do him any long term damage; its not as if he was ever hurt.
As for Davies. Does this mean he is planning on fighting Joshua Buatsi soon? that is not a fight I can imagine those around him will want to make!!

Davies is clearly not anything of a solid - or even a decent puncher; his boxing skills are good but not special; he looked square footed last night when he was put down - but he had stiff legs walking to the corner when he got up, so his chin is questionable ... so how do you see him against a similar sized and hard hitting Joshua Buatsi?

I thought he looked poor. I noticed Billy Nelson tweeted Davies looks 100x better in the gym, so maybe a clash of styles.

I remember friends of mine raving about Merthyr super-middle Simon Collins in the gym; and how he showed glimpses of greatness sparring ... unfortunately he was never able to transfer what he showed in the gym in an actual contest.
