Anthony Mundine vs. John Wayne - November 30, 2019

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Australian veteran Anthony Mundine retired last November after a one-sided loss to Jeff Horn, but he’ll be back in the ring after exactly one year away. The 44-year-old former champion is set to face 43-year-old local kickboxing great John Wayne Parr on November 30th in Robina, Queensland, Australia.

Parr (10-3, 10 KO) hasn’t competed as a boxer in 16 years, losing a 2003 unanimous decision to Sakio Bika in his most recent effort. He’s been plenty busy in his sport of choice, though, amassing a career record of 99-33 and founding the Caged Muay Thai promotion, which features the titular competition in four-ounce gloves.

Mundine (48-9, 28 KO) is many, many years past his best, but should still be favored in this domestic grudge match by dint of actually being a full-time boxer for the last couple decades. Still better than Mayweather-Nasukawa, at least.

John Wayne Parr defeats Anthony Mundine by split decision

Anthony Mundine and John Wayne Parr squared off in a ten-round 75 kg catchweight boxing bout on Saturday November 30. The contest headlined the “Worlds Collide” pay-per-view fight card, held at Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, South Bank.

The encounter went a full distance. The verdict heard a split decision in favor of Parr.

One judge scored the bout 96-93 for Parr. Another judge had it 95-93, also for JW. The third judge awarded 95-94 to Mundine.

Mundine rocked Parr in Round 3. Parr scored knockdown in round four. Mundine was deducted a point in round eight for hitting behind the head.

JWP, 43, is a former 10 time world champion in kickboxing and Muay Thai, who held WKN super welterweight title, WMC and ISKA middleweight titles, among others. He hasn’t competed in boxing since 2003. Yet, victorious, he updates his record in “The Sweet Science” to 11-3, 10 KO.

The encounter with “The Man” was the final appearance of “The Gunslinger” inside the squared circle. He retires with a combined record of 110 wins with 56 knockouts out of 148 fight in total, plus 1 draw (110-37-1, 56 KO).

Anthony Mundine, 44, is a former WBA super middleweight and IBO middleweight champion. He drops to 48-10, 28 KO, and also retires.

The co-headline bout saw Muay Thai fighter turned pro-boxer Ben Mahoney facing off John Ruba for a vacant IBO Asia Pacific super welterweight title. The bout ended ahead of the third round. The doctor stopped the contest due to the left eye cut received by Ruba.

The undercard featured a series of bouts with local and international competitors.

John Wayne Parr def. Anthony Mundine via split decision (96-93, 95-93, 95-94).

Ben Majoney def. John Ruba via TKO (doctor’s stoppage; R3)

Remember him nearly going all the way during The Contender Asia. Great show

When I read the thread title I thought, how many boxers are called John Wayne?

 ...or Patsy Cline (IIRC there was one named that in the early 1900s) or Billy Graham or Jimmy Carter! There was even a fighting "Doc Holliday" back in the time IIRC.

Oh and who can forget the legendary "Pancho Villa"!!!
