Charlie Edwards Vacates WBC Flyweight Title

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

The World Boxing Council has revealed that their flyweight champion, Charlie Edwards (15-1-0-1 NC, 6 KOs), has decided to vacate his title after reporting that it is too difficult to him continue making the weight (50,802 kilos – 112 pounds).

In his most recent fight on August 311, Edwards retained his championship in a match that was declared a “no contest” against WBC # 1 Julio Cesar Martinez (14-1-0-1 NC, 11 KOs), at the O2 Arena in London, England.

The fight was initially ruled a knockout victory for Martinez, but then a replay showed that the Mexican puncher hit Edwards while he was down.

This is a fragment of a letter that Edwards sent to the President of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán:

I hope your well mate I just wanted to write you a message personally to thank you for everything you have done for me throughout being WBC world champion, you hold a big place in my heart and I am so grateful for how happy you have made my mum more than anything especially giving her own belt.

Me and my team have decided due to how much I struggled with the weight last time out it actually scared me about how much I was putting my health on the line and I can’t risk causing damage to myself as health is the single most important thing in life. I am gutted because I value being WBC world champion and so proud to be able to be in history as WBC flyweight world champion! The best belt in boxing by far. I want to continue to represent the WBC and really really want to push on through the super flyweight rankings and persuade the super flyweight title! But I wanted to let you know first before anyone else that I will be vacating the title to move up and challenge at the new weight. Thanks so much for everything.

What a clown. Blame it all on weight. He was really lucky last fight it was changed to a NC. We all said he would not take a rematch either.

Agree, was the only right career decision from his perspective, now he loses the belt without having to take another pounding or a loss from it

As frustrating as it is from the sidelines as a fan, definitely the right decision for his career longevity I think.

And he might end up getting a shot against TBA for a vacant title. At least for the diamond or silver belt

Not defending him, he isn't elite, fighting this guy again will finish him,

Not defending him, just saying it was the sensible decision from his own career’s perspective. Obviously we’d all prefer to see the rematch.

I hope he doesn't waltz straight into a Yafai fight - the Estrada match-up talk seems to have gone a bit quiet.

If I was his advisor I’d advise him to do exactly that,

Well seeing as everyone was so keen to watch Martinez win in a rematch, you’ll be glad to know he could be in a great fight next for the vacant.

They might make him fight Rosales next, who’s still high in their rankings. MTK might push to get Muhammad Waseem the fight, or even better yet Junto Nakatani will get it after he wins tonight.

Shows he’s not elite. It’s a correct decision in terms of his well being and career but elites don’t relinquish world championship belts because they are scared they’ll get battered off mandatory challengers.

People are entitled to their opinions. I’d be happy if he just said I don’t want to fight him but it is what it is.

I think that for a fighter of Edwards' calibre to be getting his mitts on a "proper" (HAHAHAHA) belt like the WBC, "mate" isn't strong enough.

"Bestest, most wonderful, kindest, most generous, most handsome, most sweet-smelling & munificent almighty hero Sulaiman" seems like a more appropriate line to take, IMO.

If he was struggling at the weight, of course he should move up, no issue with that. But if he wants to avoid looking like a ducking shitbag, he could line-up the rematch as a non-title fight
