I went to an MMA bill last night. A typical boxing sceptic, I was ready to knock it. But it was a really good night out.

Much more effort had been put into the bill becoming 'an event', even though it was only a small venue.

It put many boxing promotions to shame and the sport could learn from how the show was staged. We know that crowds are down and there's hardly any crossover appeal in our sport anymore. More over at BBN, if you fancy further insight.

I've just read your report on BBN, with reference to the above quote you also said "The razzle-dazzle of scantily clad showgirls, huge video screens, pumping audio system and strobe lighting helped create the impression that you were at an event, albeit in a small setting". I basically agree with you as long as it doesn't go too tacky such as with Pro wrestling.

Boxing needs to widen its appeal that's for sure. My only other thought on this subject didn't some American shows try the 'razzle-dazzle' approach recently (SHOBOX??). With mixed results on a Saturday afternoons?
