Wilder vs. Ortiz II does 275k+ PPV buys | $4m gate

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Multiple industry sources have informed BS.com that the Nov. 23 Fox Sports four-fight Pay-Per-View telecast—topped by Wilder’s repeat knockout win over Luis Ortiz—from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas will land just north of 275,000 units sold in domestic sales. The most generous estimates have the event falling shy of 300,000, although performing considerably better than previous and largely unconfirmed rumors regarding the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC)-branded event.

The figure places PPV revenue at roughly $21 million in addition to what was produced at the live gate—with those figures expected to be released in the coming days—along with international PPV sales.

Alabama’s Wilder (42-0-1, 41KOs) has consistently served as a reliable television draw, playing to favorable ratings on Showtime, NBC and Fox. His place in the PPV market remains a work in progress, as the rematch with Ortiz marked just his second career headliner in that medium. The reported figure for this event marks a slight decline from his PPV debut, as his 12-round draw with England’s Tyson Fury (29-0-1, 20KOs) sold a reported 325,000 units atop the Showtime-distributed four-fight event from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Should the estimated figure hold, it will track comparatively similar to Fox Sports’ previous PPV outing in September, when unbeaten Errol Spence edged Shawn Porter in their welterweight title unification bout in Los Angeles, California.

Final figures for Spence-Porter were not released by Fox Sports nor event handlers, nor will be the case for this event. Representatives from Fox Sports and PBC politely declined comment to BS.com, as neither platform makes it a habit to discuss PPV numbers.

Wilder-Ortiz Rematch Generates Over $4 Million: 7,403 Tickets Sold

The unbeaten heavyweight from Tuscaloosa, Alabama racked up his 10th successful heavyweight title defense following a one-punch 7th round knockout of Luis Ortiz. Their Nov. 23 Fox Sports Pay-Per-View headliner live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada generated a live gate of $4,063,141.50, as confirmed to BS.com by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

The box office total was derived from 7,403 tickets sold, with another 1,726 complimentary tickets issued to total a confirmed in 9,129 attendance. The announced fight night crowd was in excess of 10,000 according to post-fight media reports.

Final ticket sales mark a 538% increase from the last time Wilder (42-0-1, 41KOs) played the MGM and Las Vegas, which came in his 12-round title winning effort over Bermane Stiverne nearly five years ago. The Jan. 2015 event produced a live gate of $755,200 from 4,074 tickets sold amidst an announced crowd of 8,454 on fight night.

There was lots of troll rumours that it was tracking around 2,500 buys haha.

This just means Wilder might continue to headline PPV’s. I hope it depends on opponents and not just anyone.

I’d call it a success. $21m revenue, not including gate. Just less than Wilder-Fury. Gotta say, Fox do a really good job promoting fights.

Much more than I expected. Wilder is doing his thing. The event will have lost money, but not nearly as much as I thought it would.

So much for 2,500 or even the 138k 'rumors.' Not terrible at all.

Spence draws better than I thought, both his PPVs outdid Deontay's. Is Spence the American doing the biggest PPV numbers now?

275,000 makes sense, considering Wilder-Fury I did only 350K or so.

Arum is dreaming if he honestly believes that Wilder-Fury II will do 2 MILLION!! He is predicting that high to boost the PPV numbers that most think will be around 1 million buys.

The ridiculous 2,500 PPV claim was generated by some ignorant British clown named Raphael Dawkins who does childishly sardonic YouTube videos with eerie background music and sinister echo effects on his voice. He has zero credibility in the sports world and his pathetically clownish videos only get a few hundred views on YouTube!!

The figures have not been disclosed by Fox.

I’ve also read multiple articles claiming the PPV only did 138K. I can quote these sources.

Even if the fight really achieved 275K, it’s a poor number. No one can pretend otherwise.

I hope the Wilder-Ortiz bout achieved big numbers though, because otherwise it risks the potential Fury rematch if the Brit chooses to engage in a fiscally bigger bout against someone other than ‘The Bronze Bomber’z

For them, it depends on the context. If they are talking about their own fighters I'll take it with a large grain of salt. Less so when discussing others. If they are talking during the promotional process, then very little.

I mean aren't they all just gonna say stuff to make their side look good, whether it's promoter, manager, advisor, fighter, etc. They all have the incentive for issues about themselves
