Tyson Fury and Ben Davison Part Ways

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Tyson Fury has decided to replace the trainer that has guided him throughout his comeback.

Multiple sources have informed BS.com that the lineal heavyweight champion has parted ways with Ben Davison. Fury is in the process of securing a deal with the trainer who will prepare him for his upcoming rematch against WBC champion Deontay Wilder.

Davison was the head man in Fury’s corner when he fought the heavy-handed Wilder to a 12-round draw a year ago at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Freddie Roach assisted Davison during that training camp and on fight night, but Fury (29-0-1, 20 KOs) is not expected to replace Davison with Roach.

A veteran trainer other than Roach will assume control of Fury’s corner. An announcement is expected soon, since Fury’s preparation already has begun for his February 22 rematch with Wilder (42-0-1, 41 KOs) at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The Fury-Davison split is somewhat surprising because there was no indication until now that Fury was considering changing trainers. Davison even attended Wilder’s seventh-round knockout of Luis Ortiz in their rematch November 23 at MGM Grand Garden Arena to scout Wilder for their second showdown.

England’s Fury apparently will hire another trainer at least in part due to how he performed in his last fight. The 6-feet-9 Fury defeated previously unbeaten Otto Wallin by unanimous decision, but the Swedish southpaw opened a huge cut over Fury’s right eye in the third round and gave Fury a more troublesome time than expected September 14 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

John Fury, Tyson’s father, called for Davison’s firing following his son’s lackluster victory over Wallin. John Fury trained his son before he was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2011, yet he hasn’t been heavily involved in Tyson’s career since he was released.

The combo of Fury and Mayweather would be something special.

I‘m surprised in spite of the Wallin fight.

That was just John spitting out crap.

The cut was unfortunate and happened so early in the fight. It changes the whole fight.

It could be bad idea considering the fact, that Davison helped Fury to come back. However, a lot was thinking, that parting ways with Fury's uncle had been a wrong decision, still Tyson didn't suffer from that. I wonder, why he changes coach now. Maybe he now wants to train in the USA?

That's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this thread. I think he wants to train here in Las Vegas or in Los Angeles.

Whatever Davidson did, it worked.
Credit to him.
Who is a good coach for Fury?
The only thing I see lacking is his aggression. That finisher instinct.

A decade which began with Tyson Fury trekking to the United States for a ring education in the famed Kronk Gym will end revisiting his old roots.

The unbeaten top-rated heavyweight revealed plans to reunite with SugarHill Steward (nee Javan “Sugar” Hill), who will take over the training reins in his career moving forward.

“Getting the old team back up and running,” Fury (29-0-1, 20KOs) declared through his verified social media accounts on Sunday. “SugarHill Steward, Andy Lee, #kronkboysbackintown, LET THE GAMES BEGIN.”

I'm not totally surprised by the split, just by the timing. Wondering if this will impact the rematch in February. Anyone know who Sugar HIll Steward works with of note?

So what does the nephew of the late great trainer bring to the table? I don't get it.

Adonis Stevenson, too.

I think Fury did a few training sessions at Kronk years ago, when Andy Lee was there, so it's probably just someone he feels comfortable working with, rather than gamble on someone completely new.

Sugar Hill has been in the game for a long time working with Kronk fighters, certainly far far more experienced than David. Not sure what specifically he's like as a trainer but pretty sure Fury did some work with him before?

He needs a trainer who will get him to commit more to his offence.

Exactly. I'm his first fight with wilder he had opportunities to land more hurtful shots, but kept shoeshining. He's not a natural banger, but any man that size is going to get more respect in a fight if he occasionally plants his feet. He already has the defensive skills, but if you don't hurt your opponent then you're always giving them a chance over 12 rounds.

Two points

1. Has that fight in Vegas been inked for Feb, is it official ?

2. What was wrong with Davison, he seemed alright ?

He is a veteran trainer himself and worked alongside a master and plenty of good fighters. Remains to be seen what he can do with Fury though

Bet it was a contract thing with Wilder and Joshua waiting in the wings, his cut for those fights would be big.
I don't know just guessing.
