Speed = Power?
I hear it a lot, people saying power is from speed.
Why then are there so many not very fast bangers and so many quick non-punchers? Someone teach me the 'physics' or whatever.

Quick and fast are diff.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑16 Dec 2019, 18:59 I hear it a lot, people saying power is from speed.

I agree. Power can come from speed, but also from heavy hands. (raw natural power). It's the Foreman vs Wilder comp.

Re: Speed = Power?
I just mean speedy hands....power in boxing doesn't seem to work so closely to the basic relationship I see people say, that speed = power
There is a great variety among punchers, and often many fast guys don't have notable power.

F=ma
But if a newton studied boxing he’d probably add..
F=((ma)-d)(Ac + did you see it coming)-C
Force = (mass x acceleration) minus deceleration(the speed the struck fighter is moving away when rolling with the punch) multiplied by Accuracy(point of chin, liver etc) times “were they expecting it” - C (chin)
Chin would probably need some clever dick to calculate a new formula - it’s a much bigger mystery than power.

Re: Speed = Power?
You're right. I'm saying maybe some confuse quickness with speed. Take Wilder. His 'speed' is from his feet on up when he throws that straight right. Many fighters (as you know) swap power for speed by not comitting 100% on their punches and having little of their bodies behind their blows (mike dokes was strong, but he traded his power for speed). AJ isn't a slow HW and he too uses his whole body. Foreman had the power but had no speed. I'm not stating this as fact, it's just an observation.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑16 Dec 2019, 19:15 I just mean speedy hands....power in boxing doesn't seem to work so closely to the basic relationship I see people say, that speed = power

Re: Speed = Power?
You need some measure of speed to have any knockout power, but beyond that it's your physical resistance to the impact's energy that plays a big role. That's why technique is so helpful, just as in powerlifting where you want everything in its strongest position.
Imagine Mike Tyson in his prime hitting a huge tree (man didn't like trees!), and then imagine Foreman having a go. The tree's gonna repel the vast majority of the impact from both, but Foreman's doing slightly more damage because it's harder to push the energy back down the arms of the heavier, more-firmly-planted man.
Wilder generates enormous kinetic energy as a fast-twitcher, but his bent arms aren't as ‘resistive’ on impact at close range because of his lankier build (although he mitigates this with crazy acceleration). Whereas his straight right's kinda like bamboo, in that it's longitudinally stiff and transfers scary power into human-weight targets.
Hooks and uppercuts are based on the same principles as powerlifting, in that they're not optimal techniques for your biggest numbers, but their techniques are optimal for maximising muscle recruitment for those particular angles.

Re: Speed = Power?
If your going to say anthing i suppose it would be , Speed + Timing = Power ,,, One on its own is not enough ,, then you can throw in technique ,,, But guess what , heavy hands are heavy hands , youv'e got them or you have not .
Course you can, and always will, improve someones power , if you teach them correctly , but then walks in a kid, who with no training hits just has hard , and with training hits a lot harder . . .

Re: Speed = Power?
Speed doesn't always equal power but it's often the punches you don't see that hurt you or knock you out. If someone is basically an arm puncher and throws lots of fast shots then the chances of one of those knocking someone out diminishes. But if they are fast, plant their feet and throw solid shots that are well timed, then it increases.
Re: Speed = Power?
So i guess we can agree , speed + timing and throw in technique = power , which you can teach , But super power is a gift from god , , you just cannot teach , Wilder ,, Mike Tyson , George Foreman , type power ,, , If you could , everyone would be a KO puncher , alls you can teach with the above is to hit harder than they would without the teaching , if that makes senceControversial wrote: ↑17 Dec 2019, 01:56 Speed doesn't always equal power but it's often the punches you don't see that hurt you or knock you out. Speed in itself isnt enough to have knock out power. You need something behind it. Heavy hands or your whole body put into it. Gearge Foreman, David Tua not so fast they still hit hard. What do you think does the most damage ? A stick they swing super fast, a baseballbat they swing relatively fast or a sledge hammer they swing a bit slower?

I’m interested in how skinny guys like Hearns and Wilder do it. I was 6’1 and 140 lb as a 19 year old and I definitely punched harder than my stocky, brick shithouse flatmate, and he didn’t have bad technique either.

Then again you can have all the power in the world but great timing for me is what produces the kos

David Price, even Tom Dallas - if you stood still with your feet planted and your chin stuck still in one place with your eyes shut, while they lined up their best shot - like those martial-artists when they break blocks - those guys could kill with one blow, let alone get a knock out.
But if you can’t land in a real fight it’s not worth an awful lot.

Re: Speed = Power?
Power comes from momentum, which in turn comes from your mass.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑16 Dec 2019, 19:15 I just mean speedy hands....power in boxing doesn't seem to work so closely to the basic relationship I see people say, that speed = power
There is a great variety among punchers, and often many fast guys don't have notable power.
If you manage to transfer a lot of bodyweight into a shot, and are able to not have much dissipated on impact, you will land with a lot of force.
However, force doesn't always lead to knockouts, its very complicated mechanics as the target is not passive.
