Gerrie Coetzee vs Corrie Sanders

Post by DrDuke »

A clash of the two best South African heavyweights. Whom and how would you pick to win? And why?

I haven't seen enough of Coetzee to make an informed pick, but one thing I will say is that people seem to forget that for every Wlad performance Corrie had (an that was about 1 lol) he had loads more ones where he was pretty sh!te or was just beating on cans. His best non-Wlad performance might be the KO loss to Rahman

His pre-Wlad opposition was overall far from stellar, but Corrie himself wasn't sh!te. Rahman loss was in a competetive slugfest. He stopped Johnny Du Plooy in the 1st. As well as De Leon, although De Leon was old and had majorly performed at the cruiserweight. Also he stopped Bert Cooper.

Wlad was the best out of all opposition of both, but still Coetzee's overall opposition was better, despite the fact that he was majorly losing in title fights. Yet those losses also were competetive. His win in the title bout over Dokes is the second best victory in mutual Coetzee/Sanders resume. Moreover, Coetzee drawn vs Pinklon Thomas, where I scored for Coetzee.

In Coetzee/Sanders matchup I'd favour Coetzee, because Gerrie was better as a boxer, more well-rounded. Sanders was more dependant on his hand-speed and power. And Coetzee faced Dokes, who also had great hand-speed and power, while he also seemed to be better than Sanders. So, I pick Coetzee to win by KO. However, I wouldn't be surprised with Sanders knocking Coetzee out. Both of them were big punchers with average chins.

I'd probably go Coetzee KO10. Sanders had talent but Coetzee was the better all around fighter. He could be outboxed but the version that KO'd Dokes in 1983 beats Sanders every day

I've met the late Corrie Sanders more than 20 years ago and nearly 3 years before he knocked out Wlad. Corrie was a great guy in life and never be forgotten in boxing history. However, Coetzee was the first Heavyweight Champion from South Africa and put on a greater legacy by knocking out "Dynamite" Michael Dokes in 10 rounds with his Bionic Right Hand to win the WBA Heavyweight Title.

To me, Coetzee would KO Sanders in 11 rounds in a see saw battle. :box:

Or Sanders stop him early like Bruno
Or Coetzee KO him in midrounds like Rahman
