London cruiserweight hotshot Isaac Chamberlain has signed a long-term promotional agreement with promoter Mick Hennessy as he reignites his career towards a World title shot.

The highly-talented Chamberlain (10-1-0, 4 KO’s) has been frustratingly out of action for 16 months, but will finally relaunch himself in the division when he features on two Hennessy Sports events within a month, both exclusively live in the UK on free-to-air Channel 5.

‘Chambo’ from Brixton, South London, first features in an eight-round contest on the highly anticipated domestic dust-up between Shakan Pitters and Craig Richards for the British Light-Heavyweight Championship on Saturday 28th March at the Coventry Skydome.

The 25-year-old will follow that up quickly when he appear a few weeks’ later on an exciting Hennessy Sports event due to be announced tomorrow.

Chamberlain turned professional in January 2015 and stormed through his first nine fights and captured the Southern Area title in a memorable points victory over Wadi Camacho despite suffering a dislocated shoulder injury in the third round. His sole loss was against bitter rival Lawrence Okolie on points for the WBA Continental title, but rebounded with a victory over Luke Watkins in his last fight in October 2018.

Under renown promoter Hennessy’s adept guidance and with free-to-air national TV exposure on Channel 5, Chamberlain believes it’s all systems go as he aims to finally fulfil his destiny and become a World Champion.

Chamberlain said, “The time out of the ring has been a period of immense frustration for me but it has been a real character building exercise also. I like to look at the positives and going through this has strengthened my will and determination. I believe that I will be more dangerous and savage when I make my return to the ring on March 28. I’m so happy to have signed this long term promotional deal with Mick Hennessy and he is a person who I believe is passionate about his fighters and he fights for them. He’s a real solid person to have on your team and I need someone like him that to push me to where I need be. He’s got the track record with creating stars like Tyson Fury, Carl Froch, Darren Barker, Junior Witter and Chris Eubank Jnr and a great eye for spotting talent. He makes World Champions and that will motivate me to work hard and win. Becoming the WBC World Cruiserweight Champion is my primary goal and I’m obsessed with it. I want to be the best I can be and prove myself. Isaac Chamberlain outlines big plans with new promotional deal

Returning cruiserweight talent Isaac Chamberlain has entrusted new manager-promoter Mick Hennessy with the task of transforming his unquestioned talent into major titles.

The smooth and silky Chamberlain, still only 26, has been dormant for 22 months waiting for a promotional contract to extinguish. Now, clear of thought and fast galloping towards his physical peak, the Brixton battleship is fully primed to produce on his world-class potential.

He makes his long awaited return tomorrow night in Redditch at a TV studio against Wolverhampton’s ‘Bull’ Antony Woolery who has had a month to prepare for Chamberlain and is intent on causing an upset.

‘I suffered contractual problems, broken promises. I was given ‘take it or leave it’ ultimatums so told them to shove it!’ states the strong but stylish south Londoner who has triumphed in all but one of his 11 paid starts.

‘While I want to be the best I can be, I refuse to be used as a pawn. In the past, I’ve headlined at the O2 Arena. I sell tickets.

‘But Mick (Hennessy) has a great plan for me. There’s real structure and now I’m so motivated. He speaks about potentially four fights this year, starting with an eight rounder live on Channel Five on 22nd August, then a 10 rounder a fortnight after.’

Despite nominal amateur experience ‘IC’ made a fast and favourable impression after storming the pro scene in January 2015. Within 15 months, he’d smashed 6-0 Ilkeston prospect Russ Henshaw in six, then ascended to the Southern Area throne in his next (sixth) start after what trade paper Boxing News dubbed ‘a hellacious struggle’ with Canning Town antagonist Wadi Camacho (WPTS10).

Alas, Isaac’s rise stalled when at just 23, he topped the bill at the O2 Arena against 2016 Olympian and future European czar Lawrence Okolie in early 2018 that resulted in his first career loss on points.

‘I believe everything happens for a reason,’ he says.

‘I was meant to lose to Okolie because of my (in)experience. Before, other people controlled everything. The loss taught me I had to take control and responsibility for my own career.’

Though the ‘Gloves Up, Knives Down’ ambassador’s ring CV lists just 11 starts in over five and a years among the paid brigade, it belies the Londoner’s true ring experience.

He explains: ‘I’ve sparred extensively with (ex WBC heavyweight boss Deontay) Wilder in Alabama, with (unified cruiser king Oleksandr) Usyk in the Ukraine, (Mateusz) Masternak in Poland, Mike Perez in Ireland….

‘I’ve also sparred AJ, Dillian (Whyte) many, many times over here. Above all, those spars built confidence that, at a very young age, 21, 22, I could mix it competitively with the best big fighting men on the planet whilst in an unfamiliar environment. That builds inner strength, mental strength.

‘I was always eager enough, humble enough, to learn and adapt but there were times when I’d outbox them because of my skills. Usyk, especially, was kind enough to give me pointers….until I became a bit too competitive with him!’

Such experiences, they say, can’t be bought, borrowed or stolen and they are sure to serve the south London ticket seller well when he finally returns to battle with just the Channel Five cameras reeling at a production studio in Redditch. And Chamberlain has developed itchy fists.

‘Through lockdown, I’ve been working out like there’s no tomorrow at the 12 Rounds Boxing gym in Clapham,’ he says.

‘I’m now trained by Rasel Hechadarria, a former coach with the Cuban national squad who is assisted by Bobby Miltiadous. Rasel has installed real rythym and flow into my boxing. He’s improved my distance, my co-ordination and my agility. Fans can expect a far smoother, sharper, more polished ‘IC’. He’s really worked on developing my eyes to anticipate opponents’ shots. I long to be great so I’m eager to learn.

‘I’m usually well supported so I’ve really no idea what to expect, fighting at an empty venue. But the way I’m feeling, physically and mentally, as soon as I touch them, I’ll get them out of there, and go home. I feel very confident in both our system and all the hard work I’ve put in. I aim to get the public on my side and be positioned to call the shots.’

Chamberlain’s comeback is sure to enrich a domestic 200lb duchy that, in addition to the undefeated and world ranked Okolie, includes British boss Richard Riakporpe (11-0), Commonwealth king Chris Billam-Smith (10-1), English champ Deion Jumah (13-0), Tommy McCarthy (16-2), Jack Massey (16-1) and Mikael Lawal (12-0). All are matches to salivate over.

‘If it makes sense, I’ll fight any of those named. In time, I’m gonna smash ‘em all out of the park!’ concludes confident Chamberlain.

‘Boxing is a business and if you’re disciplined, live the life, there’s no reason to be running away from anyone but, honestly, I’m more focussed on my own progression as a fighter than the others.

‘Riakporhe is a very good friend from our days training together under Ted and I’ve already beaten two Commonwealth champions (Camacho and Watkins).

‘It’s all up to Mick. I think he’s looking more at an international belt to get me going, increase my appeal to the casual fan. Basically, whatever can fast track me to a world title. That’s the dream.’

Isaac Chamberlain plots comeback after career-saving shoulder surgery

British cruiserweight contender Isaac Chamberlain spoke exclusively with Ali Drew for Hennessy Sports’ YouTube channel about his career saving shoulder surgery as he gears up for his long awaited return to the ring.

Chamberlain has been out of action so far this year as he underwent major surgery for his right shoulder following a severe injury suffered in sparring in early November last year ahead of a title fight on a show planned for later that month and a win would have seen Chamberlain back into the world top ten rankings and world title contention.

The problem first started when the Brixton boy dislocated his shoulder in the third round of his Southern Area Cruiserweight title fight against Wadi Camacho in September 2016 and after incredibly ‘popping’ it back in, he bravely fought on and won by four rounds on the score cards in one of the fights of the year.

IC then went into a number of fights carrying the injury, including his big showdown with rival Lawrence Okolie in February 2018, unable to punch with his right hand properly and just getting through with his talent and heart.

Following his points over Luke Watkins in October 2018, Chamberlain was sidelined as he saw out a managerial contract, but was then signed by promoter Mick Hennessy and made his return in August last year with quick stoppage wins against Antony Wollery and Matt Sen just two weeks’ apart.

After succumbing to the injury in training again earlier this year, Chamberlain saw a specialist and it was advised that he have surgery to repair the shoulder to continue his career. A successful operation conducted by a world leading surgeon has since seen Chamberlain undergo intense rehabilitation and is raring to get back in the ring.

Chamberlain said, “Whilst I was preparing for a title fight that was going to get me into the top ten in the world, I was sparring and I had a massive…I basically tore my rotator cuff [right shoulder], all the muscles in my rotator cuff and obviously that was very painful, so I had to have surgery and it’s been very, very difficult but I just have to trust the process,”

“I’ve been doing my rehab for a while now, we really tried to rush it and get back on May 22nd, I’ve been seeing all my friends fighting and obviously I couldn’t. So I was kind of thinking of doing that, but Mick was like be really, really careful. I would have had to start sparring 5 weeks before that and my shoulder was nowhere near as close to being prepared for strenuous exercise, so we had to delay and wait to fight on the next show,”

“The shoulder has been healing up very, very well, it’s getting a lot stronger. There’s a lot of promise in getting the right hand back and in all of my fights before, I kind of never really used it since 2016 with the fight with Wadi Camacho. So it feels great, like a massive breath of fresh air that I can use my right hand in full confidence in my arsenal as it wasn’t really there before so I had to sacrifice and use different types of techniques.

“That’s why I was always knocking guys out with a body shot or a left, never a right hand I never really felt a one-two or a double jab-right hand, so I had to really change the way I fight and it worked to a certain extent, but if you really want to fight the best in the world and really be with the elites you need to not be at a disadvantage,”

“I’ve always wanted to be among the best, I always wanted to get in there and show…forgetting how my body actually feels. As boxers you’re so so tough and you’re just thinking ‘I can get through whatever, I just need to fight, I can get through whatever,’ and you forget the things that are being detrimental in the long run and that’s a result of what happened with me,”

“But it’s okay, everything is sorted out and it’s full steam ahead and I really believe it’s not going to be anymore setbacks,”

“Everything I do and everything that happens to me I find a way to use it as motivation, I always try to find a way to use it as motivation, this has happened how can I deal with the situation that happened to me.”

Good fighter - but I think a promoters nightmare.

Okolle is hardly spoken about by the media and he is a world champion - the loser of that fight is going to be so hard to get fights.

Nice to see a promoter give him a chance though - he has talent, just think people won't forget / forgive him for that Okolle fight.
