Hello,
I have recently got into boxing, and have been looking at the history and routes. I am getting a little confused with some of the early fights as the stats dont add up, for instance Bob Fitszimmons is listed as 61W 8L 4D but when you count the fights listed it is actually 70W 12D 13L....... why is this the case!!
Also John L Sullivan doe snot have a fight listed where he wins the World Heavy Weight Championship, though research suggests it was against Kilrain. Is this because he was Bare Knuckle and only given credit as the fight when Corbett took the offical title from him??
Would appreciate any insight.
Good old timers!
Re: Good old timers!
Yes Sullivan/Killrain is not there because bareknuckle fights aren’t listed on here.Lynyrdbox wrote: ↑17 Feb 2020, 13:16 Hello,

On the Fitzsimmons question, it looks like it’s because ‘newspaper decisions’ are listed on the record but not added to the total at the top. You may know already, newspaper decisions were given in states where it was illegal to have judges award a decision so they went with the consensus verdict of newspapers covering the fight.

Thank you my friend, appreciate the reply. Shame on the Sullivan front as many consider him to be one of the best ever champions but his point in history works against him. This era is amazing and the fighters are proper insane, could only see Mike Tyson, Gevonta Davies or perhaps Fury cutting thier mustard back in the day!
Re: Good old timers!
I've never heard anyone say this era is amazing...the game is in trouble
Re: Good old timers!
Think we can give him a pass seeing as he’s a newcomer to the sport, once he delves deeper I’m sure he rethink his stance on this era and probably change his opinion on the 2 Tysons and Davis ability to make it in another era !
Re: Good old timers!
To be fair, what the fighters went though in the 18th and 19th century I doubt any fighter alive today could manage. If you do not think that their lives amidst the brutal aspects of boxing at that time is not amazing, then I think the modern game has polluted you. The difficulties in travel and seeking out opponents to make a living must have been a huge challenge in itself.
