A Preview of Jersey Joe Walcott's First Pro Bout

Post by DavidKehler »

Jersey Joe Walcott, then using his real name--Arnold Cream--turned pro in a bout in Vineland, NJ, in September, 1930. Previewing the card, in the September 8, 1930, edition of the Vineland "Evening Times", here is what reporter Joe Valentine wrote of Cream's debut:

Arnold Cream, a colored youth from Merchantville, will make his initial bow in the pugilistic world when he collides with Cowboy Wallace, of Philadelphia, in the opening fracas carded for four frames. Cream is said to have the makings of a good scrapper and also is said to carry the kick of a mule in both mitts. Well, we will wait and see.
