Fighter knocks out his opponent as Ref stops the fight

Post by gilgamesh »

Someone mentioned this on Twitter earlier. In all my years of watching Boxing I've NEVER seen a fight end this way.

John Meekins vs Mohammed Kowaya

Just figured I wouldn't be alone in this, and would like you fellas to see this bit of Boxing oddity.

I remember when it happened. Even better was the ending of Lee Roy Murphy vs Chisanda Mutti in 1985

It has a boxrec page so some notoriety but I've never seen it before.

Not quite the same but one of the most notorious endings to a fight has to be Starling Molinares.

The ref was stepping in but I don't think either fighter had an idea, certainly the punches were being thrown before the ref got there

I think that (almost)happened in the Brian London vrs Ingemar Johnsson fight.
Johannsson was way ahead but in the last seconds of the last round Brian London floored Johansson (but ref didnt stop fight, because he got up with 4 seconds left
in time for final bell.

Slightly different but I remember the Marlon Starling v Thomas Molinares fight, as the bell sounded to end round 6, Molinares threw an overhand right which put Starling spark out. Apparently it's because of this that they introduced the ten second warning sound.
