Why not this?

Post by jas80s »

I am pretty sure that I will never fork over 80 bucks for a PPV, even as a boxing fan. There is just too much I can do with the money. However, one of the main reasons this is the case is because the under card often has nothing that particularly interests me.

As I watched the Harris-Martinez Fly weight fight on the Garcia-Vargas under card the other night, I thought if they would put really compelling lower weight fights on the under cards of PPV events it would accomplish a few things..

1. It would raise the quality of the card overall which might appeal to more serious boxing fans who don't want to pay a lot of money for crap.

And

2. It would make boxing more appealing to all fans as good fights are the best advertising boxing can get.

It doesn't seem like money would be a huge problem, do these guys really make a ton to fight? It's not like you have to throw Canelo money at them. And I would have to believe that they would jump at a chance to be on a widely viewed card for their own future money making potential.

I'm sure there are reasons that this doesn't happen, but I'd be far more excited to see a compelling lower weight match up of hungry, prime fighters than to see some HW flavor of the month beat up on a disinterested Chris Arreola.....again. I'm just curious as to why not? Do they think not enough people are interested? (which could be true)

Thing with this fight you mentioned, on paper, it wasn't supposed to be as competitive as it was, and people order ppv's before the event.

As much as paying an additional fee on top of my regular subscription sticks in my throat,, I have say that £20 or £25 is pretty good value on Sky and Eddie pays attention to stacking the undercard with interesting match-ups.

The prospect of paying 75 or 80 bucks though fills me with horror. I'm not saying I couldn't afford it but sometimes I struggle to justify to myself paying even £20 when it's only going to be me who will be interested in watching.

I can't think of any other example of pricing on both sides of the Atlantic where it isn't we brits getting the sh1t end of the stick.

The GGG and chocolatito combination worked , most of the great fights have been around the feather weight zone with the likes of Barrera ,Morales,Nas, Kelly and manny

I agree with this, and I think HBO tried to use this principle in its final days when its budgets had been slashed. They started showcasing superflys because you could get top matchups made in that division without paying huge money.

The last PPV I bought was GGG vs. Jacobs because it had a good main event and a good undercard.

Yeh, GGG and Chocolatito shared at least 3-4 cards together. Even when GGG fought Brook in the UK, HBO aired it live and then showed Gonzalez vs. Cuadras and showed a repeat of GGG-Brook.

The SuperFly cards were really cheap to put on. Tom Loeffler was a little clever there.

Just an example of the purses.

The first SuperFly card:

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai: $170,000
Roman Gonzalez: $600,000

Naoya Inoue: $182,500
Antonio Nieves: $35,000

Carlos Cuadras: $62,500
Juan Carlos Estrada: $65,000

Total Purse: $1,115,000

Probably make that back on ticket sales. Any other fights on the card would probably be paid peanuts.

Super Fly 2 Purses:

Rungvisai 250k
Estrada 100k

Cuadras 25k
Arroyo 25k

Nietes 40k
Reveco 30k

Viloria 50k
Dalakian 25k

These were even lower.. Total purse payout: $545,000
