The nickname 'Pompey' is a widely used term to refer not just to the football club, but to the whole city. The exact derivation of the word Pompey is not known, but it's almost certainly of naval extraction. Some of the theories are : A group of Portsmouth-based sailors, who scaled Pompey's Pillar near Alexandria, Egypt, became known as the 'Pompey Boys'. Others claim the name originates from a French battleship 'La Pompée', captured in 1793 and which eventually became the guardship to Portsmouth Harbour.

I went to one of the shows in portsmouth, and have to say it was one of the worst crowds for intimidating behavior, i got a mouthful off one idiot for clapping when Oakley's opponent was introduced, then was subjected to abuse all the way through it because they thought i was against them.mickeybeard wrote:A more pertinant question would be: why is that part of the world? If I never go back again, it'll be too soon. With apologies to any Pompey lads on here, obviously.
In the end i had to leave early as i knew that it would get worse after the bout.
I know through a mate that Oakley is a good bloke, he just seems to atract some bad fans. A bit like Tony Sibson a few years ago.
