Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
https://www.insider.com/devin-haney-sai ... man-2020-4
The comments are similar in tone to Bernard Hopkins' notorious statement to Joe Calzaghe ahead of their 2008 bout, which Calzaghe, who is white, won.
A 21-year-old American boxer likened to Floyd Mayweather said he'd "never let a white boy" beat him.
WBC lightweight champion Devin Haney made the comments during a 78SportsTV live stream on YouTube which involved a fan-led Q&A.
Haney competes in the wildly-competitive 135-pound weight class, a division in which undefeated fighters Gervonta "Tank" Davis, Ryan Garcia, and Teofimo Lopez all campaign in.
Vasyl Lomachenko, one of the greatest amateur boxers of all time and a technically-adept pro, is regarded as the best lightweight fighter in the world today, according to Boxrec, The Ring magazine, and Boxing News.
Commenting on a potential Lomachenko fight, Haney said: "I'll tell you this, I'll never lose to a white boy in my life. I don't care what nobody got to say. Ain't no white boy who can beat me any day of the week.
"Fight a white boy 10 times, I'm gonna beat him 10 times," Haney said.
Haney's comments are similar in tone to a statement Bernard Hopkins made in 2007 ahead of an eventual fight with the British light heavyweight Joe Calzaghe.
In 2007, Hopkins told Calzaghe: "You're not even in my league."
The long-reigning former middleweight champion added: "I would never let a white boy beat me. I would never lose to a white boy. I couldn't go back to the projects if I let a white boy beat me."
Calzaghe, who is white, beat Hopkins in 2008, landing more punches on the American than any opponent had at that point.

This stuff is silly but it sells tickets.
Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
I guess that's decided then. Lomachenko should just give up his belt. Tank's the only guy in the division who can win
Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
He can likely beat every white American.

Hopkins said that once, didn’t work out too well for him.
Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
Didnt Hopkins got beaten by white boy Calzaghe after that comment? Then by white boy Kovalev and ultimately knocked out of ring by white boy Smith? He must feel like an idiot if he watches that comments today smh. Haney just wanna atention because people in America are so oversensitive to racism and promoters know that. Only color they all care is GREEN. Boxing was always infected with idiotic talks but it is just too much in recent years. Wondering if sport will lose popularity if boxers actualy behave at least somewhat decent out of ring and in interviews. Too much sh!t talking and no real top fights (in recent pandemic months literally no fights)make my beloved sport less relevant. Just sad.

Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
Not until this post have I noticed how few top level white American boxers there are. This is probably why the likes of Haney and Hopkins have said this as Americans usually have no idea what's going on outside their country. Either that or they're ignorant racists, who knows.

Might be ignorance, or might just want to sell tickets.joshj909 wrote: ↑17 Apr 2020, 10:53Not until this post have I noticed how few top level white American boxers there are. Youth talking, trying to sell tickets. No need to get anyone's knickers in a twist.
I can recall once saying that I would never lose to a woman at Pool.
Pretty soon after... you can guess the rest.

Growing up with Ali and wrestling, trash talk doesn't bother me.

These kinda bold statements have a tendency to bite you in the ass sometimes. Ask Hopkins.

Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
Meh, he got more publicity saying it than backlash when he lost to Joe.
Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
Very serious. Couldn't be more serious. Can you answer the question?
Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
I assume what he is getting at, is the channel that was interviewing Haney is part of the LDBC. As a community it is pretty infamous for its obsessive promotion of racial narratives and most recently pushing glovegate nonsense.
Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
Don't see the correlation between Haney shooting of his mouth for publicity and Wilder's KO loss to Fury. Wilder, to the best of my knowledge, didn't bring up color.

Re: Devin Haney said he'd 'never let a white boy' beat him
A large amount of black boxing fans, including black fighters, viewed the fight with Fury in explicit racial terms. Wilder himself tried to bring race into it, so when he lost it made it all the more humiliating. Haney would have been one of those who was supporting Wilder purely on racial grounds. When a black fighter loses to a white fighter, black boxing fans and black fighters themselves, view it as a double loss - the most humiliating of losses.
Also, the channel in which Haney was interviewed on is an explicitly black supremacist youtube channel. But I'm sure Haney wasn't at all aware of that. I'm sure.
