Hungarian warrior Jozsef Matolcsi was stabbed outside a Budapest nightclub in the early hours of Saturday.
Matolcsi, who floored James Hare in a gruelling fight in Manchester in 2003, then returned to fight Ted Bami and feature in a minor classic with Austria's Gotthard Hinteregger at Brentwood in October (which Boxing News made their Fight of the Year behind Carl Thompson-Sebastiann Rothmann), worked as a doorman at the club and was stabbed after he intervened in a fight.
Doctors at the Budapest hospital where the 28-year-old was taken described his condition as "serious".
