Re: Earnie Shavers versus Cleveland Williams
Slick Willy's excellent defensive moves would only save him for long, he'd be unable to get the win, as was the case pretty much every time he faced someone good
And man, did he get his ass whooped good some number of times too, not just that he lost but that he was totally brutalized. puncher's chance since Shavers had vulnerabilities himself, though he was a tougher guy and Clev's power was overrated and not shown at a very high level consistently. I think he would be good highlight real material for Shavers most likely

Editor's Note: The only fighter who stopped Williams in his prime was Sonny Liston. No one else knocked him down in his prime either.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑10 Jun 2020, 19:40 Slick Willy's excellent defensive moves would only save him for long, he'd be unable to get the win, as was the case pretty much every time he faced someone good

big clev was dropped and stopped throughout his career, at every point from beginning to end, before and after being shot, even if you try to conveniently exclude all those. reminds me of wlad fans acting like only his fights after brewster and before fury count

Nope. He was a pro less than 2 and a half years when he fought Satterfield. He also took the fight at the last minute. He fought Jones before that even.

From 1956 to 1966, it was only Liston. I know you aren't into boxing history before you got interested in the sport , but Williams had an interesting story. He was actually shot by the police. He had several serious injuries. Lost a ton of weight. Was not expected to ever fight again. He made a comeback but was never the same. He fought for several years. Most all of the knockdowns that you keep bringing up were after he was literally shot.
Take a look at Ezzard Charles record sometimes. count the knockdowns. Then look when most of them were.

Seriously bruh. Another interesting tidbit; Stan Ward never lost a fight in his prime year of 1980margaret thatcher wrote: ↑17 Dec 2021, 18:26 knocked down or stopped multiple times at the beginning, middle, and end of his career. hurt on several other ocassions throughout. a real iron man indeed

Re: Earnie Shavers versus Cleveland Williams
You should have stuck within 1965. Mel Turnbow knocked him down in 1966, not to mention Ali later that year. Try again Mr. Historian.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑17 Dec 2021, 18:14The term prime means something.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑17 Dec 2021, 16:55 big clev was dropped and stopped throughout his career, at every point from beginning to end, before and after being shot, even if you try to conveniently exclude all those. reminds me of wlad fans acting like only his fights after brewster and before fury count![]()

He was 33-1 when he got stopped in the 3rd by 176 lb Bob Satterfield. That should count for something.
Re: Earnie Shavers versus Cleveland Williams
What's up here? Another Clev-worship day by Alp? Sugar Cleve hardly faced any non-sh!thouse during his so-called prime FFS.

yup, alpy replied to a year and a half old post of mine, he was compelled to defend the great cleveland williams , the iron man slickster
Re: Earnie Shavers versus Cleveland Williams
Earnie was a sugar sweet wizard himself, but hell no, ain't no Cleve would win Shavers. The kayo would be guaranteed in favor of good ol' Cobb's son.

Both after he got shot. Doesn't count. He went almost a 10 year period where he only got stopped by Liston. you won't find a bigger Ali fan than me. I have never claimed that Williams was in his prime when Ali beat him.
Can't believe people would dispute this.

Re: Earnie Shavers versus Cleveland Williams
He was literally pulled out of the crowd the night of the fight. He had no idea he was even fighting that night. Unclear if he even had his trainer there.
I guess i don't understand what the deal is here. (btw I'm not a fan of his. Don't really care one way or the other about him.)
We hear crybaby excuses all the time.
But with Williams people are counting fights after he was literally shot and not expected to fight again. People want to count a fight when he was pulled out of a crowd at the last minute.
People act like I am counting only a short window of time for his prime. We are talking almost 10 years.
Wtf?

ya, he hadnt even ever boxed in his life at that point, despite being a 33-1 pro. credit to little bob, about the size of a smw today, for icing such a beastly bigger opponent
