Mayweather Trainer Claims McGregor Offered $1.5 Million To Work His Corner in 2017

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Nate Jones, who was one of Floyd Mayweather's trainers, has made a claim that UFC superstar Conor McGregor tried to offer him a huge sum of money to jump ship in 2017.

McGregor made his boxing debut in August 2017, when he challenged Mayweather, who was coming back from nearly two years off.

Mayweather broke him down and stopped him in ten rounds at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Jones became close friends with Mayweather at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta. Both of them won bronze medals.

After he retired in 2002, Jones began working full-time in Mayweather's camp.

Before the fight with McGregor took place, his camp reached out to Jones and tried to persuade him to join their corner.

"Floyd don't know this but I got a call from Conor McGregor's people to work his corner for that fight – and I hung up on them. They offered me $1.5 million but I hung up on them. I got a call from Montell Griffin and he said, 'people want to holler at you Nate, they're McGregor's people.' And they called and I'm like, 'what's up?' They was like, 'man, he interested in you being in the corner. We'll pay you $1.5 million – whatever you want, mention what you want.' And I hung up," Jones explained to the "Rocky Road: Rewind" podcast.

Jones also revealed that McGregor was very nervous in the moments leading up to the fight with Mayweather.

"When McGregor wrapped his hands, we sent a representative which was me. And I've never seen someone so nervous in my life. That's the part of the fight that shocked me the most because going into the fight, McGregor was talking a lot of smack," Jones said.

"In the locker room getting ready to fight, he was very shook. He went to the washing room six times. Six times. I was like, 'what is wrong with this dude?' He was very shook for that fight. Going into the fight, I was worried about him not being a boxer, I was worried about the unknown. And he brung to the table his size. I was worried about that but we handled him well, we chopped him down and stopped him.”

Man making his professional boxing debut vs the p4p no. 1 and ATG (in front of one of the largest audiences in history) was nervous.... Wow thanks for the insightful revelation

One of those what if/sliding doors type moments really. If Nate was in Conors corner I almost guarantee Conor would have stopped Mayweather. Conor and Tenshin came close but no cigar; should have offered him more than a paltry 1.5 mill.

I don't think your guarantee is worth a great deal.

Never seen a fighter who wasn't nervous, some hide it better than others.

If anything he did Conor a favor turning it down.

Would've been the equivalent of wiping your ass with 1.5 Million dollars

I can't imagine anything anybody could've told him would've made a difference in the result.
