Ali vs. Frazier II - Inside the Round 2?
The referee ends the second round 10 or 15 seconds early,
It wouldn't be important if not for Ali's right hand punch to Frazier which slightly staggered Frazier, the ref stops the round shortly after Ali staggered him and before Ali could press Frazier more.
Could Ali score a knockdown in this round if the ref didn't stop it early?
I don't think it would be a knock out like the video claims, since Frazier get up against Foreman several times, but I think it could've been a knockdown.

I guess, you're right. However, I highly doubt, that there would have been even a KD.Tevfik1907 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2020, 17:01 I don't think it would be a knock out like the video claims, since Frazier get up against Foreman several times, but I think it could've been a knockdown.

The round ending early was odd, but no it didn't deprive Ali of anything except for maybe a few more clean shots.
He wouldn't have dropped Joe.
The only time I saw a mistake where the round ended early that could've costs somebody big was Jessie Vargas vs Tim Bradley when Vargas had Tim out on his feet, and Pat Russell mistakenly thought the 10 second warning. Vargas needed the KO to win, and while it was a long shot, he was as close to getting it in that last 10 seconds there as he was at any other point in the fight.

Frazier was down heavily in the second versus Bonavena, who he came back to dominate, and shaken up in the first versus Manuel Ramos, who he proceeded to massacre. No way would 10 extra seconds have resulted in a KO for Ali, Frazier would have regrouped from whatever else was thrown at him and gone on to go the full 12.

I think he would survived the round. Even if he gets knockdown, it would not have cost him because the scoring was on the rounds system and he lost the round anyway.
If the situation was reversed and Ali was hurt and the ref heard an bell by mistake, we would hear constantly how the ref favored Ali.

Fully agree. and besides, if Ali would have ended that fight in the following minute, all the fans would have had to have gone home early. Not nearly as entertaining. Oh.....and the third fight might never have happened. And although that would be good for those two legends, boxing would not be the same without the Thrilla in Manilla.
Historically? Very Good thinking on the part of the time keeper.

Foreman may have KO'd Lyle in round 2. That round was only 2 minutes and Lyle was in trouble.gilgamesh wrote: ↑30 Jun 2020, 17:45 The round ending early was odd, but no it didn't deprive Ali of anything except for maybe a few more clean shots.

Lyle was hurt no doubt but was fighting back..with the punishment he was able to handle throughout the rest of the fight I think he would've made it out of the round.

Well. Thank the Boxing Gods that he didn't because Rounds 4 and 5 of that fight are some of the all time most spectacular and dramatic Heavyweight rounds ever.Tony1244 wrote: ↑01 Jul 2020, 10:13Foreman may have KO'd Lyle in round 2. To me, the most controversial aspect of the second bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier was that Referee Tony Perez allowed Ali to clinch far too much. Carlos Padilla may not have been the greatest referee in the world, but he didn't allow Ali to clinch a lot in the third Ali-Frazier bout.

Clinching is rather common......but the ol' two minute round? That's rare as hen's teeth.Chuck1052 wrote: ↑01 Jul 2020, 12:37 To me, the most controversial aspect of the second bout between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier was that Referee Tony Perez allowed Ali to clinch far too much. If that was prime Foreman, Lyle was out of there anyway.Tony1244 wrote: ↑01 Jul 2020, 10:13Foreman may have KO'd Lyle in round 2. Muhammad Ali was, in my view, the greatest heavyweight of all time. And not only could he not knock Joe Frazier out, he couldn't knock Joe Frazier down. Ever. Frazier simply wouldn't have permitted it to happen. Go look at the 14th round of Manila if you think otherwise.
Re: Ali vs. Frazier II - Inside the Round 2?
Then that one minute "early release" in round 2 was just the thing to keep that spirit alive! Things happen for a reason.bwu wrote: ↑02 Jul 2020, 21:19 Muhammad Ali was, in my view, the greatest heavyweight of all time.
