Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Callum Smith - 19 December 2020

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Canelo Alvarez’s team have reportedly now offered Callum Smith $5million to fight him on September 12.

It was already known that the Mexican star is actively seeking his next opponent as he makes plans to return after missing out on his May fight because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Various names have been touted, but now Mike Coppinger on The Athletic’s Pug and Copp podcast has reported: “I’m hearing that Callum Smith is still the frontrunner.

“That is the fight DAZN wants, I’m told that’s the fight Canelo wants.

“From what I heard, Callum was offered $5million late last week. He’s been asking for $6m, but it doesn’t seem like they’re very far apart now.”

Regarding other rumours, Coppinger added: “Canelo is not going to fight Jason Quigley, as has been discussed [online].

“From what I’ve been told, DAZN wouldn’t even approve that fight and Canelo has no interest in it.

“The only guy I think now being discussed heavily is Callum Smith.

“Maybe John Ryder would be considered if Smith and Canelo cannot agree on the money.”

Canelo was initially set to face WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders on May 2.

However, the Brit ruled himself out of contention for the rearranged September date, hence why he has now changed focus to Smith.

Regarding how the pandemic affected his training, Saunders said to The Athletic: “Every gym was closed, and my grandparents are very elderly, I live next door to them.

“There were a few [health] scares. 75 per cent of my time [was dedicated] to her, I couldn’t leave the place, I had my kids every other day…

“If they think they’re going to cut my money and cut me short, that’s not going to happen.

“Considering he’s getting $35 million, they come to me for a pay cut in September?

“They want to get short notice and a pay cut. Why not him take a pay cut?”

I'd love it. I've no specific reason to dislike Smith, I just really want to see him getting folded with bodyshots.

Out of Ryder, Smith, Quigley or Munroe, I'd rather see Smith, plus there's a backstory (Canelo beat Liam)..

Ryder may have "beaten' Smith, or deserved that win, but Smith on his best day is much better than Ryder.

I believe Smith received around $4m+ in the WBSS final..

$5m to fight Canelo, even during Pandemic can seem low. If these boxers had any confidence in themselves, they'd take it.. Beat Canelo and then cash out even more in the rematch.

It seems when most boxers fights Canelo, they're there just to be paid..

5m is a lot of money, but easy for these guys to look at canlo's other recent opponents getting 12-13m and then not being happy with it

I think it's his brothers plus Tesco Joe that have people rooting against him. The Ryder fight won't have helped but the scores weren't his fault.

Even if it was an off night though, if he struggled with Ryder's aggression and punching down at the target he's bang in trouble against Canelo.

It's weirdo Paul who taints all the others....none of the other 3 seem particularly unlikable

Cal is capable of a lot better than he showed against Ryder, if Canelo is just looking at the Ryder fight he could be in for a big surprise. Callum has been his best in his biggest fights and has looked mediocre in stay busy types. He's one of those guys.

Will be some funny looking head to heads if this one happens, Nelo probably coming up to Cal's waist
