Jessie Vargas says he’ll be fighting at 160 soon

In this video interview captured by Fight Hub TV, Jessie Vargas talks about how he plans to stay in boxing for many more years to come and how he’ll have to be moving up in weight to make it sustainable. Check out some excerpts of what Vargas had to say below...

Vargas on his upcoming career plans:

“I’m not making 147 anymore, that’s for sure. It’s just too hard to make. I first made my pro debut at 140lbs, 138, back in late 2008. I had already made the decision to move to 154 in 2019, which became a knockout victory for me against Soto thankfully. Felt great, knocked him out in the sixth round...I’m glad we were able to give (the fans) a good show.

“2020 was a tough one. We came back down to 147 because we felt that I could find a way to make 147, and healthy. I did make the weight but it was crucial, it was just very grueling for me, was tough, especially the last two weeks. I knew that 154 was the right weight for me, right where I was gonna feel great, phenomenal, at optimal level. Honestly, ‘54 is my weight division and I’ll be coming up to 160 soon. I don’t think I’ll be able to stay at 154 for too long.”

So a guy who fought to a draw with Broner who is probably more natural for 140 and lost to Mikey Garcia who is also not even a natural welterweight wants to move up? He'll be cannon fodder at 160 for sure.

Alright. I doubt it'll go to well for him, but it's his career.

He'd be doing well to even crack the Top 10 as a Middleweight.
