Tim Tszyu vs. Dennis Hogan - March 31, 2021

Former world title challenger emerges as frontrunner to face Tim Tszyu in December

Two-time world title challenger Dennis Hogan 28-3-1 (7) has emerged as the frontrunner to face rising junior middleweight star Tim Tszyu 16-0 (12) in December.

The 35-year-old Brisbane-based Irishman is coming off back-to-back losses in world title fights.

Hogan moved up in weight and was stopped in seven rounds by WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo 30-0 (22) in Brooklyn, New York last December.

Eight months earlier he was desperately unlucky not to get the nod over then-WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia 35-0 (28) on the road in Monterrey, Mexico, losing by majority decision.

Tszyu, 25, is coming off a career-best win over Jeff Horn in Townsville, Australia last month, dropping the former WBO welterweight champion twice and stopping him in eight.

“There is a new frontrunner to face Tim Tszyu and everyone has been entering the sweepstakes to get this fight because it is probably the biggest money fight you could have on Australian soil at the moment,” broadcaster Ben Damon told Fox Sports.

“And the man that No Limit Boxing who promote Tim Tszyu think is the biggest challenge for their man right now – and that’s what they want after seeing him against Jeff Horn, is to see him step up yet again – they believe that man is Dennis Hogan, who has formally fought for a world title overseas, a couple of them in fact.

“He probably should’ve won one of them when he went to Mexico to fight against Jaime Munguia. Dennis Hogan was quickly clearly ripped off on the cards and did not get the belt he deserved.

“Interestingly, that was the WBO’s super welterweight belt which Tim Tszyu is now well placed to fight so at some point.

“So they’d really like to test him against Dennis Hogan, who is an Irishman now based in Brisbane and who could have a fight himself in the US later this year, but obviously with restrictions the way they are in boxing, the way that it is in 2020, that might be difficult, so it could be a fight that is of interest of those at DDP that promote Dennis Hogan.”

Tszyu has effectively cleaned out his backyard over the past two years, defeating Australian champion Joel Camilleri, world-rated Dwight Ritchie and rugged brawler Jack Brubaker along with Horn over the past 16 months.

The only other viable domestic opponent is Michael Zerafa 27-4 (16), who split a pair of fights with Horn last year.

“What that does of course is leave Michael Zerafa out in the cold,” Damon continued.

“We saw Michael Zerafa in a couple of fights with Jeff Horn last year. He won one of them in emphatic style and the other one of them will go down as one of the greatest domestic fights of all time against Jeff Horn when he was beaten on points in that fight when Jeff Horn produced the punch from the gods.

“But No Limit Boxing says the proven world-class opponent is Dennis Hogan and they say they haven’t seen that from Michael Zerafa just yet.

“The other one in the conversation is Daniel Lewis, a little bit early in his boxing career, but he does have a bit of history with Tim Tszyu in the amateurs and he’s very keen to get that fight as well.

“But right now, Dennis Hogan is best placed to fight against Tim Tszyu, probably in early December.”

Meanwhile, Tszyu has reflected on his victory over Horn, saying he knew he had his measure in the early going.

“Everything became an instinct and I knew what to do,” he told the Back Page on Fox Sports. “As soon as I landed that first shot, I saw his eyes into the back of his head.

“I knew from the first minute, as soon as I landed the first shot. Once we got into a clinch I gave him a nice little right uppercut to the body and I heard him go ‘urgh, urgh’. I knew it was over since then.”

Perfect way to slow this gentleman's career down and to kill the hype. Tim Tzyu is too big for them, they should turn him over to Al Haymon, Golden boy, Arum etc.

How many fights does Tim have?

To that i must add,...how many times you guys think that a fighter should fight domestic before going international, and does it help or hurt fighting a lot of domestic fights before you go world?

Cause for example, there are many countries where boxers seem to spend a career "within the borders" or fighting other "within the borders" competitors, like Argentina, Mexico, Australia, the United States and England.

On the other hand, I was told by someone a long time ago that in England, boxing is so popular you can make a living off fighting there exclusively.....

And at Wikipedia, notability guidelines do include American, Australian, British and Canadian national championships as qualifying for Wikipedia but not other national titles so I wonder if that all has to do with the sheer number of boxers from those countries versus, say a Bahamian national title where there might be two fighters per division.

In short, how many fights does Tim have and is it good or bad to have a lot of domestic bouts before going Inter?

That would be a good fight for Tim. Would of liked to see hogan get a couple of wins after tough losses but hey strait Back into a hard one. Hogan, then zerafa in aus while everything’s fucked, then hunt big international names or world titles. Back end of next year.

Tim Tszyu Return Targeted For December, A Few Names in Play

The return of undefeated junior middleweight contender Tim Tszyu is being targeted for dates in December, in Sydney.

Last month, Tszyu picked up the biggest win of his pro career when he demolished former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn in Townsville.

Tszyu (16-0, 12 KOs), now ranked at two by the World Boxing Organization at 154-pounds, was hoping to fight WBO junior middleweight world champion Patrick Teixeira (31-1-0) of Brazil.

But the WBO is not going to allow Teixeira to step away from his mandatory obligation to Brian Castano.

The bout with Castano was scheduled to take place earlier this year and pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic.

As far as the man in the other corner, it will likely be a domestic opponent with several local names being targeted.

The venue being reported, according to WA Today, is the Bankwest Stadium.

Queensland has been home to some of the biggest recent events in Australia - including Horn's shocker over Manny Pacquiao at Suncorp Stadium.

Some of the name being kicked around, include Dennis Hogan, who used to fight at Horn's gym in Brisbane. Hogan (28-3-1), who is back at 154-pounds, lost a controversial decision to then-WBO junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia in April 2019. Hogan last bout was a knockout loss to WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo last December.

Another name is Michael Zerafa, who went 1-1 in a two-fight series with Horn. And another name is Daniel Lewis, who beat Tszyu in the amateurs in a youth title fight in 2011. Lewis lost to undefeated Sebastian Fundora at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in February, as part of the undercard to the Deontay Wilder-Tyson Fury rematch. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, he's been out of the ring since.

Tim Tszyu vs. Dennis Hogan in Talks For Showdown

There are ongoing discussions for a potential 2021 clash between junior middleweights Tim Tszyu and Dennis Hogan.

Tszyu, a rising star in Australia, was hoping to get a crack at the WBO junior middleweight champion Patrick Teixeira.

But, those plans went up in smoke when Teixeira was granted a visa to the United States to make a mandatory defense next month against Brian Castano.

Hogan was scheduled to face former WBA, IBF, IBO junior middleweight champion Julian Williams in December - but that fight also fell out when Williams tested positive for COVID-19.

Following Tszyu's first round demolition of Bowyn Morgan, Hogan called him out for a fight.

"I know I beat Tim and he believes he beats me so let's prove who is the best super welterweight in Australia, if not then no problem," Hogan stated. "The winner moves into a world title shot."

Tszyu's manager, Glenn Jennings, confirming to Sporting News that there are ongoing discussions taking place and they are playing out in a positive manner. He notes that a deal may get reached in the coming weeks.

"Nothing has been signed yet, but it's very close to being made official," Jennings said.

"It's a fight we were keen on last year, but Dennis had a fight with Julian Williams lined up, so it didn't happen. We're obviously not too keen on travelling around the world too much in the current climate, so we're more than happy to revisit the fight with Hogan and take on all the local fighters."

Earlier this week, Hogan revealed he was in training camp for his next fight.

"If you mention another fighter's name be prepared for them to say yes," Hogan said. "I said yes. Camp starts today."

Hogan has been out of the ring since December 2019, when he moved up to the middleweight division and was knocked out by Jermall Charlo.

a real test for tim, been a hogan fan from Rodriguez Berrio 2014 and hogan has got better and better and fought for world titles lost to Jack Culcay and Jaime Munguia which i think hogan won that fight , but the charlo fight showed us were he was at against the best fighter , tim is tough he will have to go after hogan early and hurt him, as hogan will go all day , i think tszyu will have to much power for hogan i see a mid earlry ko , could be the fight that puts tim in the lights as only charlo has done that to hogan

Great fight. Good step for his career, hogan seems bellow horn and thus bellow tazyu if you look at numbers or achievements, but recently he lost a close fight to munguia, that he arguably should have won.

If tszyu blasts him out then that’s a great comparison to draw to munguia, if he gets a slightly tough win then it will be a good developmental fight, if he gets a very tough win then he knows to dial back and develop more, and if he loses then we know his level.

Tim Tszyu vs Dennis Hogan set for March 31 in Australia

The Aussies will collide in a junior middleweight fight at the end of March.

Official social media pages for Tim Tszyu and Dennis Hogan both confirm that a deal is in place and the date is set for the two fighters to square off on Mar. 31 in Australia, with further details to be announced.

The 26-year-old Tszyu (17-0, 13 KO) is working his way into contention at 154 pounds, following a one-sided drubbing of former welterweight titlist Jeff Horn last August, and wrapping up his year with a first round thrashing of Bowyn Morgan on Dec. 16. He was hoping to get into a WBO title fight, but Patrick Teixeira is set to make his mandatory defense against Brian Castano on Feb. 13, so Tszyu is staying busy and taking on a solid opponent for the time being.

Hogan (28-3-1, 7 KO) is still best-known for a controversial decision loss to Jaime Munguia in Apr. 2019 in Monterrey, Mexico, a fight that easily could have gone Hogan’s way on the cards, but didn’t. Less-discussed is his follow-up bout in Dec. 2019, when he was dominated by Jermall Charlo in a move up to middleweight.

Hogan, 35, can certainly be a tricky opponent, but his effective trickiness seems largely to depend on the other fighter being extremely basic, which Munguia can be. His other loss was a decision against Jack Culcay in 2015, which was a deserved Culcay win for sure. Tszyu has shown sincere dedication and potential, and likely will not be as relatively simple a task as Munguia can be with his one-speed, flat-footed approach.

That’s not to say Hogan isn’t a solid opponent for Tszyu at this stage, because he is, and if Tszyu starts getting ahead of himself, or doesn’t have a good camp, or just has an off-night, Hogan is the type of guy who can turn into a pain.

No word on potential U.S. outlet for this one yet. ESPN+ did air Horn-Tszyu but not Tszyu-Morgan, and a Hogan fight is sort of in the middle between those two, I’d say. DAZN could certainly have interest with their global expansion and all.

Dennis Hogan: Tim Tszyu is Best Path To Another World Title Shot

Junior middleweight contender Dennis Hogan (28-3-1, 7 KOs) is hungry to secure another world title shot.

Back in 2019, Hogan traveled to Mexico and lost a controversial twelve round decision to then WBO world champion Jamie Munguia.

And then in December of the same year, Hogan took a big risk when he moved up to middleweight division, where he was overpowered and stopped by WBC world champion Jermall Charlo.

After taking some time off, he was scheduled to fight Julian Williams in a world title eliminator last December. The fight was canceled when Williams tested positive for COVID-19.

2021, however, is looking a little brighter for Hogan.

On March 31 in Australia, Hogan will be in line to secure another world title shot - if he beats undefeated rising superstar Tim Tszyu (17-0, 13 KOs).

Tszyu is ranked at number #2 by the WBO at junior middleweight. A victory would allow Hogan to snatch away that ranking.

“This will lead to another world title and that's the reason I want it,” Hogan told Irish-boxing.com.

“I want to get back to a world title fight ASAP and Tim provides the best pathway at this time. He’s next in line for the WBO title and that’s the title I feel I should have on my mantlepiece right now.

“Tim is building well into an all-rounded pro and I believe he will go on to be a world champion, but that’s well down the line. He has more maturity to gain and only after he’s been in with more experienced fighters like myself will gain it.”

“It’s a huge fight, to be honest. I can’t see a bigger one out there right now. Jeff Horn and myself have been recognized as 1 and 2 pound for pound [in Australia] for a very long time. That has changed in recent months with Jeff losing to Tim and with me losing to Charlo in late 2019. I still believe I am the best and Tim has the ranking for now so again it’s a massive fight. It doesn’t get bigger to be fair.”

hogan has been in with a lot of top fighters now and only charlo has really beat him up bad only ever been beat by world champions, and i dont think he has had that much damage for his age, as he isnt just a stand and trader ,he moves upper body well, wont lie iam hogan fan for years but ive liked what ive seen of tim in his last couple of fights , but this a live fight hogan wants a title shot again so tszyu will have to beat a contender, hogan will start at a fast pace and end with it too,he has an engine and throws lots of shots, if i was tszyu i would hold the center of the ring and put it on hogan, not sure tszyu has the boxing skills or engie to go 12rds he might do might find out so maybe tim might look for the ko , close fight not calling it yet

Tim Tszyu Will Look To Break Dennis Hogan Physically and Mentally

Rising junior middleweight contender Tim Tszyu is looking to make another statement when he returns on March 31 in Newcastle, against veteran Dennis Hogan.

2020 was a big year for Tszyu - as he went right through former world champion Jeff Horn and then demolished Bowyn Morgan.

Tszyu is widely viewed as a future superstar in Australia - but Hogan and his handlers are far from impressed.

"This is a great tune-up for him to get back on the world stage,” Hogan’s manager, Danny Dimas, said. “We’re not underestimating Tim. Tim’s a great fighter, a great Australian fighter. Dennis is a world class fighter.”

All three of Hogan’s career losses have come when challenging for a world title. There are many who believe he did more than enough to defeat then WBO 154-pound champion Jaime Munguia in 2019 in Mexico.

But, Tszyu views Hogan's fight with Munguia as a loss - not a victory snatched away by the judges.

“The history books don’t say that,” Tszyu said. “A loss is a loss. You can’t go back. But look, he’s going to be a tough competitor, tough challenger.

“As they say, he’s world class. But I think he’s just under that world class [standard] because he’s never been able to get to the top. But look, I need to beat a ‘Dennis Hogan’ to be where I want to be.

“I see another confident opponent who doesn’t know what they’re running into. That’s the best thing about boxing — once you get in the ring, everything from before, everything after, everything shuts away, and it’s just you and your opponent in that particular moment. [The goal is] to take their soul and their belief and everything they’ve ever worked for ... it’s not just [about] the W, it’s taking everything away.”

Hogan: I'll Make Tim Tszyu Look Completely Average, This is My Time!

Undefeated junior middleweight Tim Tszyu is getting annoyed with some of the comments coming from his upcoming opponent, world title challenger Dennis Hogan.

The two boxers will collide on March 31 in Newcastle.

Hogan, who many feel was robbed of a title win over Jaime Munguia in 2019, feels Tszyu (17-0) is very overrated.

He's not impressed with Tszyu's run of wins - including his victory over former welterweight champion Jeff Horn.

Tszyu has been tabbed as a heavy favorite to win by the bookies.

“I’ve got more skills, I’ve got more everything and I fully believe I’m the better boxer,” Hogan said.

“That’s why this fight excites me so much. I’ve never wanted a fight as much as this my whole life. I believe it’s my time and you will all see why. Even Jeff [Horn] at his best, he was a welterweight. The guy [Bowyn Morgan] he knocked over in the first round was a welterweight.

“Two of the best from his most recent wins are people that are genuinely at a lower weight category. They’re talking about him and all his power but he didn’t put a scratch on Jeff regardless of how the fight went down. That won’t be me, I’m fully confident in my own abilities. I know I will get the win, something inside me has opened up ... I’m all in for this, this is my whole life and I will be taking this seriously. I won’t be doing silly things. I’m going to make him look average, completely average.”

But the younger Tszyu has promised to end the career of the 36-year-old Hogan (28-3-1).

“Dennis, I’ve heard what you said about me,” Tszyu said. “Let me be very clear with you, I’m going to end you. This is your last fight.”

Tim Tszyu sends ominous warning to Dennis Hogan ahead of March 31 bout

Rising junior middleweight star Tim Tszyu 17-0 (13) says he still has plenty of room to improve despite being ranked number one in the world by the WBO.

That spells bad news for two-time world title challenger Dennis ‘Hurricane’ Hogan 28-3-1 (7) who he faces over 10 rounds at Newcastle Stadium in Newcastle, Australia on March 31.

The son of former undisputed junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu refuses to rest on his laurels, showing the same drive and determination that propelled his famous father into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

“I’m only 26 years old. I’m going to continue to grow. I haven’t reached my peak,” he said in Brisbane on Monday.

“I’ve got another 50, 60, 70 percent to improve on and that’s dangerous, especially for people in my weight division.

“Each outing I am going to be bigger and better, stronger and this camp I can really feel it in my approach and the way I have been training.

“You’re going to see another improved Tim Tszyu.”

Tszyu managed to stay busy last year despite the disruption to the sport due to the global coronavirus pandemic, knocking out former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn in eight rounds in Townsville in August and destroying world-rated Kiwi Bowyn Morgan in a single round in December.

Former Horn stablemate Hogan represents another still challenge. The 36-year-old Brisbane-based Irishman was widely thought to deserve the decision over then-WBO 154-pound champion Jamie Munguia in Mexico in April 2019 before moving up a weight class to face devastating puncher Jermall Charlo in Brooklyn in December of the same year.

WBC middleweight champion Charlo stopped him in seven but a return to his more natural weight division looks to benefit the classy Hogan.

“I’ve got more skills, I’ve got more everything and I fully believe I’m the better boxer,” Hogan told Fox Sports. “That’s why this fight excites me so much. I’ve never wanted a fight as much as this my whole life.

“Even Jeff at his best, he was a welterweight. The guy (Bowyn Morgan) he knocked over in the first round was a welterweight. Two of the best from his most recent wins are people that are genuinely at a lower weight category.

“They’re talking about him and all his power but he didn’t put a scratch on Jeff regardless of how the fight went down. That won’t be me, I’m fully confident in my own abilities.

“I know I will get the win, something inside me has opened up… I’m all in for this, this is my whole life and I will be taking this seriously. I won’t be doing silly things. I’m going to make him look average, completely average.”

Last week Tszyu sent a video message to Hogan including some tasty barbs to hype up the fight.

“Dennis, I have heard what you have said about me (being over-hyped),” Tszyu said.

“Let me be very clear with you, I am going to end you, this is your last fight.

“I know it’s St Patrick’s Day, but I don’t believe in the luck of the Irish… you make your own luck and you create your own destiny.”

On Monday the confident Sydneysider said that despite his earlier declaration, he wasn’t underestimating Hogan, who is a $5 underdog going into the fight.

“It’s kill or be killed in this game. I’m looking for a victory, but not just a victory, to go for the stoppage,” he said.

“He’s a good boxer, I have nothing bad to say about Dennis at all.

“He’s nearly been at the top, but he’s had three chances, and his fourth time at 36-years-old, he’s going downhill now.

“It’s either me getting KO’d, or he’s getting KO’d. There’s only one result I would predict.”

Australian boxing star Tim Tszyu and former world title challenger from Ireland Dennis Hogan square off on Wednesday, March 31. The scheduled for ten rounds super welterweight matchup headlines the fight card live on pay-per-view from Newcastle Entertainment Centre in Broadmeadow, NSW.

Undefeated Tim Tszyu (17-0, 13 KOs) last fought in December 2020, when he stopped Bowyn Morgan in the first round. Prior to that he TKO’d Jeff Horn in Round 8 and Jack Brubaker in the fourth.

He was last in action back in December 2019, when he was stopped by the reigning WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo in the seventh round of their world title bout. Tszyu and Hogan has been announced as a world title eliminator. The winner is expected to earn a shot at world title against the current WBO super welterweight champion Brian Castano.

Among Tszyu vs Hogan undercard bouts, Wade Ryan and Koen Mazoudier meet in a ten-round bout with WBA Oceania and IBO International super welterweight titles on the line, and Cesar Mateo Tapia and Renold Quinlan battle it out for a vacant WBA Oceania super middleweight belt. I’m feeling Tim flogs him. Which is a bit weird because how good does that mean I think Tim is... Hogan arguably beat mungie and put up a half decent showing vs charlo.

Tim Tszyu: My Dream Fight Would Be Against Gennadiy Golovkin!

Rising junior middleweight star Tim Tszyu would love to secure a fight with current IBF, IBO middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin.

Tszyu admits to idolizing Golovkin for several years.

Golovkin, now 38, has been out of the ring back in December when he easily crushed mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta.

Tszyu, 26-years-old and competing one division below, is unlikely to face GGG before the hard puncher retires.

"My dream fight would be against GGG," Tszyu told news.com.au.

"He's been my idol for the last five, six years. At one stage I idolized him and then at another stage I said 'you know what, that would be a fight I'd love to take one day.' He's in his late 30s, [but] you never know. With these COVID situations and all this stuff. We're doing good stuff in Australia so you know."

Tszyu will return to the ring on March 31 in Newcastle, against former world title challenger Dennis Hogan.

He views Hogan as a very big step in moving forward to a potential world title fight in the very near future.

"It's another step closer to [a world title]. Dennis Hogan has been in with Charlo, Munguia, the top boys in the [middleweight] division, and he's given them trouble. So it's going to be good to see how I compare against him to the way they fought," Tszyu said.

"I've been keeping my eyes on these boys [with world titles]. They're the boys that I want. Charlo especially because he's got all the belts. But of course there's Castano who has the belt I want to fight for, because I'm the number one contender.

"If Teixeira won, he would've been mine straight away but Castano won so there's more politics involved and it's a bit harder to make."
