Sugar Ray Robinson and Joey Maxim

Post by Michael Traubert »

I have spent a large part of my life at ring side on the night of Wednesday June 25, 1952 at Yankee Stadium in the sweltering heat under the ring lights at the Sugar Ray Robinson and Joey Maxim title in the scheduled 15 round bout for Maxim’s light-heavyweight title. The ticket stub was dated for Monday June 23, 1952 as avid prizefight memorabilia collector knows. A two-day delay caused by a torrential rainstorm had forced a postponement … It is almost certain that on that night in 52 the concept of fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers were unknow to both camps Robinson and Maxim. In the ring, under all the lights, the temperature soared to 105/104 degrees Fahrenheit... what science has yet to unravel is that 90 % of boxing takes places with the use of fast twitch fibers…I make the case that Robinson of fast twitch and slow twitch muscle fibers were 90/10 probably trained up from a natural 80/20. They later weighed Robinson and discovered he had been drained of 16 pounds during the fight; Maxim had lost ten.

Maybe to many reruns of watching Richard Collier in Somewhere in Time … They say your neve 6 people away so the man who cut my hair as a lad Mike Slakic judged Robison in one of The Gray River Fights in Steubenville, Ohio... I worked in the gym with one of the boxers who was on the undercard his name is Gene Young of Moundsville WV when he was training his son Rocky Young at Walker Dick's The Yacht Clun in Wheeling WV . I was a friend of late Larry Agin and his brother Rex Agin ... Cassius Clay under Card Pittsburgh Pa.d

I just finished working the card for Bronx's New York's Young God and a host of other see a snip of my pro record as an official on the site...

In all truth, Ray shouldn't have half assed it, if he couldn't come in at 161, he never should have challenged Joey at all.

Wow you were there. That was an epic encounter. SRR fighting for the lightheavyweight title. SRR was clearly a better all around boxer but Joey was a better lightheavy. You being part of history is incredible thanks for sharing. The heat must have been a scorcher.

I am very much a student of boxing what I do not know could fill volumes … I am working fights I am always learning humility, an being a good listener is always my goal. Ray Robinson trainers sat all most out of camera site they understood the jealousy and racial climate of the era. Think about how smart that was …
I learned from them watching old films that humility was a big part of being successful in the fight game. Always say Thank you when some reads yours article in the paper when you’re just coming up … a young boxer from Wintersville Ohio won a big belt as a trophy up in Mansfield Ohio one night in Sherrod Brown birth town. I counseled the young man be proud in school Monday telling him say thank you for taking the time to read the article be gracious in victory...
You mention Robinson weight I did the weigh in for National Golden Glove Champion Beaver Falls boxer Kiante Irving Saturday September 1, 2018 for his pro fight /Sunday 2, and September 2018 was the Inspector for his Saturday 5, January 2019 bout. What a nice young man conducts his self in a professional manner. watch the boxer to win a title down the road Please everyone teach me about boxing and Robinson I want to learn more … God Bless
