Sergio Martinez vs. Jussi Koivula - December 5, 2020
Sergio Martinez vs. Jussi Koivula Deal Reached For December 5
Former two division world champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez has already set down an opponent for his next fight.
He will face the Finnish contender Jussi Koivula on December 5th in Spain.
The boxer, who will stage the event thought his own promotional company, confirmed the information on Wednesday.
Although so far the Spanish city that will host the event has not been specified. It has been reported in the media that the fight between "Maravilla" Martínez and Koivula will possibly take place in Torrelavega.
This is the second fight for the comeback of Martinez, after his return to the ring on August 21, when he stopped Spanish contender José Miguel Fandino, after the pause imposed by the coronavirus pandemic on sports.
That bout was his first since 2014, when he suffered a knockout loss at the hands of Miguel Cotto in their middleweight title clash.
It should be remembered that the 45-year-old boxer from Buenos Aires has a record of 52 wins (29 KO), 3 defeats and 2 draws, and since his last fight, he has been positioned in sixth place in the middleweight division rankings of the World Boxing Association (WBA).
Martinez is hoping to have a few more fights before securing a title fight with WBA "regular" champion Ryota Murata of Japan.
For his part, the 36-year-old boxer Koivula, a native of Tampere, Finland, has not fought for more than a year. He's lost three of his last four fights, and he's been away from the ring after losing by knockout to Conor Benn last year.
He has a record of 24 victories (9 on the fast track) and 7 losses (3 before the limit).

He's basically fighting a blown up welterweight.
Fought Conor Benn last year, stopped in 2 rounds.

Useless match-up but at least he has got the opportunity to present himself to the Japanese public (Murata?).

Sergio is 45 and looked bad against Cotto, have no idea how he has been in his last outing. But, why fight on?

Some combo of money and boredom.

Murata vs Martinez would be over very very quickly and shouldn't be allowed for the sake of Martinez's health. How the hell the WBA can justify putting a 45-year-old in their rankings, let alone at 6 is shameful! But I can imagine from a business standpoint he would get a lot of money going over to Japan to fight and it builds Murata's name more but its a fight for all the wrong reasons!Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑24 Sep 2020, 06:02

People are speculating that Martinez is in need of money but tbh Martinez didn't look like the type of guy that he's spending reckless all his money and show off like Broner. I think he made enough money to live very good in a country like Argentina, unless he got carried away and took some uninspired business decisions.
