Gilberto Ramirez Forms Zurdo Promotions, Returns Dec. 19 Versus Alfonso Lopez

Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez is ready to resume his career and on his own terms.

The unbeaten former super middleweight titlist from Mazatlan. Mexico will end a lengthy layoff with a targeted ring return on December 19. Ramirez will face Alfonso ‘El Tigre’ Lopez in a regional light heavyweight title fight live on Fite TV from a location to be determined.

The event will be presented by the respective promotional companies of both main event fighters, Zurdo Promotions and El Tigre Promotions. A promotional piece offered by both boxes suggested the event will take place in Texas, although an exact venue has yet to be secured as this goes to publish.

Ramirez (40-0, 26KOs) has not fought since a 4th round stoppage of Tommy Karpency last April in Los Angeles. The win marked his light heavyweight debut after having made five successful defenses of the super middleweight title he claimed in an April 2016 win over Arthur Abraham in Las Vegas.

Plans were in place for Ramirez to eventually fight for a vacant light heavyweight title, only to instead go on the shelf due to a lengthy dispute with estranged promoter Top Rank. The two sides officially went their separate ways shortly after Ramirez bailed on a proposed four-man light heavyweight tournament announced earlier this year to fill the vacant WBO title.

Ramirez has since resurfaced with his own promotional company. His upcoming bout will end a 20-month layoff by opening bell, assuming the independent PPV show moves forward.

Lopez (32-3, 25KOs) enters riding a 10-fight win streak including three victories in 2019. The bulk of his career has taken place in his home state of Texas, though the 38-year old from Huntsville remains best known for a narrow points loss to former lineal middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in 2011.

The upcoming bout with Ramirez will end a 13-month layoff for Lopez, who scored a 10-round decision over Denis Grachev last November in his most recent outing.

Also budgeted to appear on the show is perennial Top 10 heavyweight contender Michael Hunter II (18-1-1, 12KOs). An opponent has yet to be established for the Las Vegas native, who has called out every major fighter in his division but to no avail.

The show will, it seems, be carried by FITE TV, but it also looks like most people are going to be very busy that night with something else, be it Canelo vs Callum Smith, Ryan Garcia vs Luke Campbell, or Gennadiy Golovkin vs Kamil Szeremeta. All of those dominoes will fall across that weekend (or not, maybe), and at least one of them will definitely be on Dec. 19.

Honestly that would be a huge improvement.

Zurdo's career has been such a disappointment.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Open To Facing Gilberto Ramirez in 2021

Former WBC middleweight world champion Julio César Chavez Jr. appeared at a press conference on Wednesday and advised the press in attendance that he prepared very hard for his upcoming fight with Argentine contender Nicolás Masseroni, in the main event bout taking place next Friday, November 27, in the Revolución Park, in the capital of Sinaloa.

Chavez Jr. will look to snap a two fight losing streak.

During a press conference that took place at a restaurant in Culiacán, Chávez said that currently he is no longer interested in fighting for a world championship, because he only wants to face great fighters

"I think that in 2021 we will try to fight early in the year, maybe twice, and after another two more fights, look for something in May or September if there is any opportunity to fight for a championship... but no, I am no longer interested in just fighting for the championships. world championships.... what I want is to fight with the best, that's what I would look for, big fights," Chavez Jr. said.

At the announcement, Chavez ho was accompanied by Karim Arce, nephew of Jorge "Travieso" Arce, and Karen Rubio, who will also fight on this card.

He confirmed that his fight against Nicolás Masseroni will be at the light heavyweight 175-pounds, and over the ten round distance.

As previously reported, Chavez indicated that he spoke with the Municipal President of Culiacán, Jesús Estrada Ferreiro, who agreed to lend him the Revolution Park to stage the event and only 550 fans will be allowed to enter, with full sanitary restrictions for COVID-19.

In addition, he expressed that it will be special to fight in the Revolution Park, the place where he had his first fight as a professional 17 years ago.

"I hope it is a good fight, that it is clean, without head clashes, without cheating, that it is to the liking of the fans. I will give my best in the ring," said Chávez Jr.

"For this type of fight it is fine (at 175 pounds), but for important fights like against Daniel Jacobs or that type, I would like it to be at 168 (pounds)."

Chávez Jr. admitted that he would like to face Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramírez at some point.

"We have already traded gloves (in sparring), Ramirez is a good boxer, he is very tall, difficult, but if I would like to have a fight against him, it would be something very interesting," Chavez Jr. said.

Zurdo Ramirez to come back on Dec. 18th PPV

The return of former super middleweight title holder Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez (40-0, 26 KOs) will be Friday night, December 18th, when he faces light heavyweight Alfonso "El Tigre" Lopez (32-3, 25 KOs), live on pay-per-view from Galveston Island Convention Center in Galveston, Texas. "Battle of Rio Grande" will be available for a suggested retail price of only $24.99. The 29 year-old Ramirez (pictured) fighting out of Mazatlán, Mexico, became the first Mexican super middleweight champion in 2016, when he defeated WBO champion Arthur Abraham. Ramirez successfully defended his world title against Maksym Bursak, Jesse Hart, Habif Ahmed, Roamer Alexis Angulo and Hart in a rematch. Ramirez' last fight, his first as a light heavyweight, was last April in Los Angeles, in which "Zurdo" stopped Tommy Karpency in four rounds. Ramirez then became a promotional free agent.

Lopez will be fighting close to his home in Huntsville, Texas. "El Tigre" will be riding a ten-fight win streak into the ring for the Dec. 18th 12-round main event. He hasn't fought in 13 months, registering a ten-round decision win over 19-9-1 Denis Grachev. His previous fight was a fourth-round stoppage of 21-3 Alex Theran.

"I'm looking forward to hosting my first fight and appreciate all the support and love I've received from everybody," Ramirez said. "I want to give special thanks to FITE.TV, El Tigre Promotions, Be Def Sports, and the state of Texas for being great partners in this event. I know it's been a long road to return, but I feel great having full control of my career and being able to fight whenever, wherever, and however, I want. As always, I appreciate my trainers - Julian Chua, Joel Flores, and Chris Wong - keeping me in shape since my last fight and I feel better than ever to step back in the ring. I'll see you guys December 18th in Texas!"

Gilberto Ramirez's career at 168lbs was very similar to Terence Crawford’s current plight at welterweight.

Both fighters were granted an honorary rite of passage to being considered the very best of their respective divisions, without anyone requiring the need for them to prove it against elite-level opposition campaigning in the same weight classes.

Both fighters captured their titles by beating champions that weren’t considered anywhere near the best of their division, and they also defended their straps against anonymous unheralded names or has-beens.

And both of these disgruntled unbeaten fighters were promoted by Top Rank, with the former having already left Bob Arum and the latter on course to departing very soon.

Zurdo has only competed in one fight within the last two years, and I can appreciate his reasoning for facing an opponent with a superficially-impressive record, but in reality, the 38½-year-old Lopez is just another Mark De Mori that is going to be stopped (with consummate ease) within six rounds.

Ramirez is competing in a mismatch that will allow him to clear some of his ring-rust.

There's nothing to be excited about here.

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (40-0, 26 KOs), fighting out of Mazatlán, Mexico, became the first Mexican super middleweight world champion by defeating World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Arthur Abraham on April 9, 2016.

Zurdo pitched a shutout in what was his first world title fight, winning all twelve rounds on all three judges’ scorecards. A year out of the ring followed, Ramirez had five successful title defenses, three against undefeated boxers, in the next 18 months.

Amongst the defeated: Maksym Bursak by unanimous decision, Jesse Hart by unanimous decision, Habbi Ahmed by TKO-6, Roamer Alexis Angulo by unanimous decision, and Jesse Hart once again, this time by majority decision.

Zurdo then moved up to light heavyweight and beat Tommy Karpency on April 12, 2019, whose corner threw in the towel four rounds.

Alfonso “El Tigre” Lopez (32-2, 25KOs), born in Corpus Christi now residing in Huntsville, Texas, has won his last ten bouts; only two went the distance.

The former Texas State Super Middleweight Champion won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas super middleweight title in 2010.

His ten-fight win streak began with a first-round KO over Sean Wilson on October 18, 2014. On July 13, 2019, Lopez won the World Boxing Organization (WBO) NABO light heavyweight title; and in his last fight on November 16, 2019, he won the NABF light heavyweight title, which he will defend on December 18.

Headlining the undercard will be a heavyweight clash between Michael “The Bounty” Hunter, ranked top ten in the world, and former World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas champion Chauncy “Hillyard Hammer” Welliver.

Hunter (18-1-1, 12 KOs) of Las Vegas is rated #4 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), #7 WBO, #10 WBC, and World Boxing Association – in addition to being ranked # 8 by The Ring magazine.

Hunter’s last bout was a 12-round split decision draw in Saudi Arabia against former world heavyweight champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Alexander Povetkin.

The well-traveled Welliver (57-13-5, 23 KOs) from Spokane, Washington, has won numerous regional titles worldwide, including FECARBOX, WBO Asia Pacific, WBO Oriental, WBC Latino, New Zealand, and had seven successful defenses of the Continental Americas heavyweight title.

“Battle of Rio Grande” will be available for live viewing on digital, cable, and satellite, starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT, on pay per view for a suggested retail price of only $24.99. FITE TV will stream worldwide on the FITE app and website (www.FITE.tv). Integrated Sports Media will distribute throughout North America via DirecTV, iN Demand, Vubiquity, and DISH in the United States and Canada on Shaw and SaskTel.

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: I’m extremely excited to back in the ring. It’s been a long year of ups and downs and we have been kind of unsure. At my age I’m saying this is not what a fighter needs. I am used to fighting on a consistent schedule. It’s unfortunate but I’m very grateful we got to pull this off.

What did you do during the pandemic?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: I stayed in the gym, lifting weights and hitting the bag. I made a little gym in the garage since all of the gyms had been shut down. A lot of running, keeping the body in shape and not overindulging on the food a deserts. We had to stay strict hoping the opportunity would come and here it is.

How do you plan to fight Zurdo?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: In the fight, as the rounds go on, we are looking for consistency and great conditioning. We focused a lot on conditioning and our strength. I think as the rounds go on you are going to see patience and growth as a fighter from over the years and the wins that we have had and bring it all together on December 18.

It looks as though you two have respect for one another . . .

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: When you have tremendous respect for each other, what happens is both fighters bring their A-game to the table and you end up getting this amazing fight not only for yourself but the fans in general. It’s a blessing that we are both humble and respecting guys because the people that get to witness the fight we are about to put on are the overall winners.

Keys to victory?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: Just kind of being me. The keys are going to be you have to be in shape any time you are going to fight Zurdo. He is one of the best pressure fighters in the business – he stays on you and keeps driving. I have to be prepared mentally to deal with his strength and to really stay in there and bang it out with him. We’ll see how it turns out. We don’t know what’s going to happen until we get in there. 40 guys have gone in there against him and 40 have failed because he is legitimate – one of the best in the business. We’ll just get int here and see how the fight turns out and we’ll make adjustments as we go.

How is it promoting your own fight?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: As a promoter I have been in the business for 3 or 4 years now, so it was a little easier for me because we kind of had it all laid out so just making it on a larger scale. With Zurdo, that kind of added a little more stress because it is such a big event. We are fighting for a NABF title and we are both ranked in the top ten. There is more at stake here so creating it for the fans and a little more stress but he has a great team and I have a great team. I think we are going to do a great job and it’s an amazing even from the undercard to the main event.

What do you mean by “being me?”

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: I am a boxer mover. You have seen me I can box and move around the ring to offset what he is going to pressure me with. Or at the end of the day, I am Mexican blooded and I can get in there and bang. If it has to turn into forehead to forehead, hey lets go for it. Being me is letting my competitive nature dictate what I do and not getting frustrated with anything.

What kind of challenges have you had to endure to train in the pandemic?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: The challenges were you had to make your own gym. They had everything shut down so we created a gym in the garage and tried to do some bag work with the coaches but a lot of us were stuck at home, especially if we had close elderly family members. We really couldn’t get together and you find yourself doing long runs alone and bag work alone and strength work alone. It was a little difficult but here in Texas it opened up a little bit and we got to get out and get into some of the gyms as long as we stuck to the guidelines but I wouldn’t say it was the best case scenario for a training camp but we did the best could and we are going to be a in great shape.

What are you expecting on December 18?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: On December 18 I am expecting the best Zurdo that we have yet to see. He is going to bring a filled in light heavyweight body and he is going to use that size to his advantage and I think he is going to be better physically prepared since he has had time to settle into the light heavyweight body.

Did you train differently for this fight?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: In this training camp I made some adjustments to how I was conditioning compared to several of my other fights. I spent a lot more time doing road work and strength and conditioning and really focused on a lot of flexibility just to make sure that for the longevity of the sport we can be 100%. I know the dedication is there and the hunger is there and during a lot of my runs I just feel great and can’t wait to get back in there.

Do you have a message for Zurdo?

I ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: don’t have anything to say to Zurdo exactly. I am expecting Zurdo to be at 100% and may the best man win.

Who do you like in the Canelo-Callum fight?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: I like Canelo in a late round stoppage from some body shots.

How do you like being a parent?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: It is really interesting and different.

Why did you decide to go on your own?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I have been in boxing a long time but I think I made a lot of mistakes and that’s why I made my own promotion company because I want to help young fighters reach their goals as a fighter and as a businessman to let them know how negotiate to reach those goals.

How was the break with Top Rank?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: We are still friends. My contract expired and I didn’t want to renew and that’s what happened but I think in the near future we can still work together because he has one champion and potentially another so we will see.

How did this fight come together?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: We reached out to the Tigre Lopez team and they agreed to a fight with us to do a co-promotion deal and it’s really good for me because I have been outside of the ring for almost two years and no I come back. Alfonso Lopez has the NABF title and I hope he’s coming really prepared to put on a great show for all the people and all the fans.

How has the pandemic affected you?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I have been training the whole time, even during Corona. Before during training I was a little upset because of first my contract and then Corona but now everything is in place. I put all of the pieces in place and I feel ready now to get in the ring and put on a great performance.

Will we see anything new ion the ring?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: Yes you are. I am going to put everything that I have done in training to put on a great show for the fans and that’s all I want is for people to watch the fight on December 18.

What do you have to say to Alfonso Lopez?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I hope El Tigre comes in in great shape to put on a great show and best of luck.

Who do you like in the Canelo-Callum fight?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I like Canelo because he is Mexican

What should we expect in the fight?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: Expect a WAR, El Tigre has Mexican blood and inside the ring 2 Mexicans it’s guaranteed a WAR. My team and I worked on the game plan together. I believe he is real good he’s never been stopped and he has 10 victories in a row. I trained like a true champ not taking him lightly I think it’s a good for us both at this time.

Expecting a knockout?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: More than anything my hand will be raised I’m 41-0 and I think the KO will come on it’s own

How about Zurdo Promotions?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I feel happy and excited to help young fighters. I’m working hard with El Tigre Promotions. They have a good team as a promoter everything is working out as planned and as a fighter I’m gonna leave it all in the ring. That’s right my fight will be live only on Fite TV 24.99 make sure you guys go get it and don’t miss a fun night of action

You announced the fight on the 19th then changed it to the 18th and now you are on same night as GGG. . .

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: Nothing controversial the fans know boxing they will watch both fights it really doesn’t matter we can both fight on the same day and people will still tune in boxing is what people want and they are getting it. And GGG, it’s a good thing because the fans want to see boxing it’s been needed and like I said the fans will be watching all 3 fights that weekend .

You and GGG training in the same place?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: Yes, GGG and I have been in the same gym training for our fights

Canelo and Eddy Reynoso again said they will not face a Mexican opponent . . .

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I know that fight will happen one day I’ll just keep winning and do what I do and that fight will happen. I also want to be the face of boxing and I know to be the face of boxing I will have to beat him down the line – I just gotta keep on winning.

How was training during the pandemic?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: We focused a lot on boxing and strength and conditioning because he is an amazing fighter and he brings a toughness to all of his fights. He world a world champion and he’s undefeated. We have prepared ourselves for the best fighter in the world and be ready the best that we can.

Will you try and go for early KO?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: I don’t think is the best way to jump into a fight with Zurdo. We both have a lot of experience and we both will rely, in the ring, on all of our experiences. He has never been hurt really – he has a heck of a chin.

Do you feel disrespected in boxing?

ALFONSO “El Tigre” LOPEZ: I don’t feel disrespected, Zurdo is a superstar in the sport. I know what he brings to the table and I know why kind of fighter I am because of what I have put into the sport of boxing. It’s the business of boxing if people don’t see you and you aren’t promoted everyone sees you as a guy that is just there and that’s the business of boxing.

There was some talk of you fighting Bivol . . .

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: My team and I, we discussed it (Bivol fight) and decided that Alfonso was the best opponent for us right now but I think in the near future the Bivol fight will happen, but right now I don’t see beyond and I am focusing on Alfonso.

It seem throughout your career you have been having a tough time getting the top opponents . . .

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: Right now I feel great and that’s why I started my own promotional company so I can choose my best path for my career and I will have control, after this fight, all those kind of fights will happen. At the beginning I was frustrated abut that (getting top fights) but all of the fighters want the big names. It didn’t happen during that time but now I can make that happen. I can work with different promoters but right now I have Alfonso Lopez and he has the NABF title and I have prepared for this fight because he has what I want.

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I have to be worried about the fight in the ring and be sharp. I don’t feel like I have to be worried about anything in particular because I have trained so long for this fight – I was my longest training camp in my life and I feel great. I feel ready to rumble. Ready to put on a great show in Galveston, Texas on December 18. I can’t wait to be in the ring as a fighter.

How is the promotional company coming along?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I have ten fighters in my promotion. Some of them fought in Mexico a couple weeks a go and some will be fighting on my card. We are going to have another show in February in Mexico. It is really interesting being a promoter because I want to help the fighters. I want to have champions to, obviously, but I want to teach them how the business is as a fighter and as a promoter. They have to know everything and I want to help them.

What do you want to accomplish against Lopez?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I want to send the message that I am the best light heavyweight in the world and everybody will see on December 18. Alfonso has been winning in his last ten fights in a row and he’s never been stopped and we are going to put on a great show for all the fans.

Can you make it back to 168?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: I could make 168 if I cut off my leg. But I don’t think I can go back to 168, it is too much on my body and I feel that I would rather move up. Move up to cruiserweight and then heavyweight – why not?

Do you think a Canelo fight will happen?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: Of course a Canelo fight can happen. Like you say with me and him fighting back-to-back this weekend – people will watch Canelo and they will watch me, and if the fans want to see us fight then we could make that fight happen. Eventually I will reach out to his team and I want to propose to make the fight happen. He has his own promotional team and I have my own promotional team so we can make it happen. If the people want to see the fight and there will be belts, for sure.

What weight would a Canelo fight be at?

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: The Canelo fight would have to be at 175. He already fought at that weight against Sergey Kovalev and I don’t want to go back to that weight. We’d have to fight at the same weight with no rehydration clauses or any of that.

GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ: Don’t miss the fight on December 18 on FITE.tv. It is going to be a good fight and we are going to put on a great show for all of them and you will see a new Zurdo Ramirez, so don’t miss it!

Lopez fighting Ramirez on a card that is literally promoted by Ramirez’s personal promotion company. He will have to knock Ramirez out twice to get a draw.

That's surprising, I'm not as die hard as I used to be but I'll usually recognize a guy everywhere.

Ya that 's the guy, but he defo hasn't fought everyone, pavlik, grachev, and maybe dyah davis at a push are the only even semi notable opponents he'd fought before, that's how he had a record like 32-3

Gilberto Ramirez, Michael Hunter win in Galveston

Gilberto Ramirez dropped Alfonso Lopez twice en route to a 10th round technical knockout victory Friday night at the Galveston Island Convention Center in Galveston, Texas.

With the victory, Ramirez improves to 41-0, 27 knockouts.

Friday night marked Ramirez’s first fight since stopping Tommy Karpency on April 12 of last year. The knockout victory over Karpency marked Ramirez’s first fight at 175 pounds after defending the WBO super middleweight title five times.

The victory over Lopez also marked Ramirez’s first as a promoter. Ramirez, who resides in Mazatlan, Mexico, decided to become a promoter earlier this year after Top Rank released him from his promotional contract.

Lopez is a fringe contender who has promoted fights throughout Texas over the last couple of years. The 38-year-old entered the Ramirez fight having won his previous 10 bouts.

After a slow start in the opening round, the southpaw Ramirez dropped Lopez to the canvas in the second round. Lopez did not look visibly hurt from the punch and was game after beating the count.

Ramirez utilized lateral movement throughout much of the fight and was more effective as both fighters stood and traded in the pocket. With each passing round, Lopez’s punch output dropped as Ramirez was accurate with his two and three-punch combinations to the head and body. Lopez would fight in spurts and did well on the inside, particularly in Round 7, but looked fatigued in Rounds 8 and 9 as Ramirez’s punches landed more flush upstairs.

During the final round, Ramirez landed a left/right combination to the head, followed by another right. The combination seemed to stun Lopez but a devastating Ramirez right hook upstairs moments later dropped him flat onto the canvas. Referee Jay Nady immediately stopped the bout.

Ramirez told The Ring before the fight that he would like to face any of the world titleholders at 175 pounds but was hoping to land a fight against WBA titlist Dmitry Bivol, who he described as the most complete beltholder in the division.

Lopez, who resides in Huntsville, Texas, drops to 32-4, 25 KOs.

In the co-feature, heavyweight contender Michael Hunter (19-1-1, 13 KOs), who is ranked No. 8 by The Ring, dropped Shawn Laughery twice en route to a knockout victory.

The win over Laughery was Hunter’s first fight since fighting to a draw against Alexander Povetkin, ranked No. 3 by The Ring, on December 7 of last year.

After scoring a knockdown in Round 1, Hunter was in control, walking Laughery down and battering him against the ropes. Laughery looked exhausted in Round 4 as Hunter pinned him against the ropes, letting his hands go. A five-punch combination dropped Laughery to one knee, where he remained on the canvas as he was counted out at 1:02.

Laughery, who resides in Oak Hill, West Virginia, falls to 10-4, 6 KOs. He took the fight on short notice after original opponent Chauncy Welliver backed out of the fight last week.
