Wilfredo Mendez vs. Alexis Diaz WBO Title Clash Set For December 16

The only current male world champion from Puerto Rico, Wilfredo "Bimbito" Mendez (16-1, 6 KOs), from Trujillo Alto, will have his third title defense on Wednesday, December 16th in the Dominican Republic. The event will be promoted by Shuan Boxing Promotions.

Mendez will put his WBO junior flyweight world title on the line when he faces the dangerous Venezuelan Alexis Díaz (25-2, 17 KOs) at the Hotel Catalonia in Santo Domingo. The world championship bout will be broadcast live on Shuan Boxing’s YouTube channel.

"The two defeats of my opponent have been in good fights against world champions (José Argumedo and Thammanoon Niyomtrong)", Méndez said. "He goes into the ring with a lot of desire to take the title for Venezuela and I understand that we both will give the Dominican and world boxing fans a great fight."

For his third defense, "Bimbito" trained at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I was working in Las Vegas with trainers Yoel González and Carlos de León. The physical work was made by Ángel "Memo" Heredia and I'm more than grateful to Mayweather's people for treating us like family. Training with great champions like Angelo Leo and Gervonta Davis has been a great learning experience. In the sparring sessions, the six-time Puerto Rican national champion Yankiel Rivera helped me a lot. I am motivated and on December 16, I will show that the island of Coquí has a lot of boxing left in the tank," Mendez said.

Gerardo Martinez 99-89 | Cesar Ramos 91-97 | Jose Roberto Torres 100-88

Dodgy judges..

The judge may not have known who was who?

Happened with Ryan Burnett vs. Lee Haskins

Jerry Jakubco 119-107 | Dave Parris 119-107 | Clark Sammartino 118-108

Sammartino's score originally read 108-118 for Haskins.

Haskins was down in the 6th round and again in the 11th..

He didn't know who was Burnett and who was Haskins.

Was read out as SD, got changed to a UD, after he admitted he didn't know the boxers.

He hasn't actually judged since then.

WILFREDO MENDEZ FALLS ILL AFTER WEIGH-IN, TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST ALEXIS DIAZ CANCELED ON DAY OF FIGHT

Wilfredo Mendez will not defend his WBO strawweight title after all.

The Ring No. 4-rated 105-pounder was set to face Venezuela’s Alexis Diaz in a 12-round main event at Hotel Catalonia Malecon Center in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, on Wednesday evening.

However, it was reported by Frases De Boxeo late in the afternoon that the 24-year-old Puerto Rican had withdrawn after feeling ill following Tuesday’s weigh-in.

Mendez (16-1, 6 knockouts) was slated to defend his title for the third time since capturing the belt in August 2019 with a unanimous decision over Victorio Saludar.

Diaz (25-2, 17 KOs) was supposed to fight for the first time in 15 months, but in the end, it was all for naught.

The main event was replaced with a 10-round affair between fellow strawweights Erick Rosa Pacheco and Byron Castellon (15-14-3, 2 KOs), but it was Pacheco (2-0) who dominated much of the action to score a unanimous decision victory.

Rounding out the remainder of the undercard, Windry Martinez and Luis Salazar squared off in an eight-round contest between unbeaten junior welterweights. However, it was Salazar (15-0, 3 KOs) who dropped Martinez (8-1, 5 KOs) on his back with a right hand in round two en route to a split decision win.
