Errol Spence Jr. vs. Danny Garcia generates in excess of 250,000 PPV buys
https://theathletic.co.uk/2253392/2020/ ... -ppv-buys/
Errol Spence Jr.’s victory over Danny Garcia on Saturday, a PBC on FOX pay-per-view, generated in excess of 250,000 buys, sources tell The Athletic.
The welterweight championship fight, Spence’s first since he suffered serious injuries in a car crash last October, outperformed PBC’s last PPV, an October junior lightweight title bout between Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz on Showtime. That event sold more than 200,000 buys but less than 225,000.
This was Spence’s third consecutive fight on pay-per-view, but it didn’t sell as well as the previous two. His 2020 fights with Mikey Garcia and Shawn Porter both reeled in over 300,000 buys.
Still, with over 250,000 buys at $75 a pop, the event pulled in at least $18,750,000 in pay-per-view revenue in addition to the live gate with more than 16,000 in attendance at the home of the Dallas Cowboys. The promotion received a strong push from FOX, with plenty of promos running on NFL...

Bob Arum Talks Spence-Garcia PPV Numbers
“I heard the satellite and dish number were minuscule,” Arum told me, of the Spence-Garcia production, which was put together and distributed by FOX, in concert with PBC. “Cable really underperformed, way lower than they thought it would do. They were hoping to do 300,000 buys.”
In actuality, Arum heard, by word of mouth, from his sources cultivated from six decades in the game, that maybe 125,000 buys were activated.
The space has been a bit crowded, arguably, what with the Mike Tyson-Roy Jones event being offered on Nov. 28. That one did maybe 1.5M buys, in that range, at $50 a pop. The Spence-Garcia deal went for $75.
You’ll recall that on Oct. 31, that was the price point for the matches offered on a Showtime PPV, topped by the Gervonta Davis-Leo Santa Cruz focus fight.
Before that, Showtime put together a PPV with the Charlo twins as the main attractions. That one did between 60,000-120,000, depending on who you ask. The Gervonta one maybe did like 200,000, or closer to the 100,000 mark, depending, again, on who the source of your number is.

Re: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Danny Garcia generates in excess of 250,000 PPV buys
I took one look at Spence Jr’s PPV buy-rates for his previous events and accurately predicted the figure for the Danny Garcia bout:
And most people will have limited disposable income during the festive period, for fairly obvious reasons, which means they can’t afford purchase every boxing event being staged this month.
To be fair, it was fairly obvious the event was going to struggle to achieve decent numbers, because people would have either purchased the Tyson-Jones PPV or subscribed to DAZN to watch bouts involving Canelo, GGG, Ryan Garcia & AJ.Enlightened-One wrote: ↑03 Dec 2020, 05:20Therefore, there’s a distinct possibility that the numbers for the Spence Jr-Garcia PPV event could underperform, to the point it might even struggle to achieve more than 250K buys.

Apprently, I read Spence was guaranteed $8m, increasing to $10m based on PPV sales and the same source stated Garcia was going to take home around $5m + PPV revenue.
Another source stated guaranteed purses were:
Spence: $1.5m (60% PPV share)
Garcia: $1m (40% PPV share)
I'm gonna take it the above figures are what were disclosed to the comission..

Think Mikey was a much bigger star than danny is, and also, the Porter undercard was much much better than this undercard. plus, trying to squeeze 75 bucks mid pandemic, pre Christmas is ambitious. so 250k seems pretty good.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑14 Dec 2020, 06:35 Spence's PPV figures are on the decline...

If it's the 8 & 5 then they wouldn't have hit their over for ppv %.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑15 Dec 2020, 12:46Apprently, I read Spence was guaranteed $8m, increasing to $10m based on PPV sales and the same source stated Garcia was going to take home around $5m + PPV revenue.

Even the lower figures they wouldn't get a piece of every buy. Always an upside.

Well said. Bad time of year for a boxing PPV. Danny is not a big draw. Errol Spence isn’t drawing half a million legal buys.gregregegg wrote: ↑15 Dec 2020, 18:28Think Mikey was a much bigger star than danny is, and also, the Porter undercard was much much better than this undercard. plus, trying to squeeze 75 bucks mid pandemic, pre Christmas is ambitious. so 250k seems pretty good.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑14 Dec 2020, 06:35 Spence's PPV figures are on the decline...

I always ask, but, in case it isn’t obvious - does this figure include the digital buys? Digital is the future of pay for access viewing. Not counting it means whatever number you have is useless.
I assume like always it’s being counted.

As long as it's good for PBC an Al Haymon, I'm happy, I would go to war for that man

Mikey has a bigger fan base and following than Spence. It was him that bought most of the buys in that one.gregregegg wrote: ↑15 Dec 2020, 18:28Think Mikey was a much bigger star than danny is, and also, the Porter undercard was much much better than this undercard. plus, trying to squeeze 75 bucks mid pandemic, pre Christmas is ambitious. so 250k seems pretty good.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑14 Dec 2020, 06:35 Spence's PPV figures are on the decline...

Errol Spence-Danny Garcia Generates $2,615,075 Live Gate From 14,508 Tickets Sold
Errol Spence continues to prove to be the hottest ticket in town.
The unified welterweight titlist from Desoto, Texas extended his run as a box office draw in addition to his in-ring dominance in his 12-round unanimous decision win over former two-division champ Danny Garcia (36-3, 21KOs). The Dec. 5th event headlines a Fox Sports Pay-Per-View event live from the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys and which generated a live gate of $2,615,075 from 14,508 tickets sold according to the final tax report with the Texas Department License and Regulation.
Another 704 complimentary tickets were issued for a total fan attendance count of 15,212. Fight night attendance was announced at 16,102, with such figures provided by the on-site fire marshal to account for everyone in the venue.
The bout was the first for Spence (27-0, 21KOs) since his 12-round split decision win over Shawn Porter in their memorable Sept. 2019 welterweight title unification clash. The fight also headlined a Fox Sports PPV show, airing live from Staples Center in Los Angeles, which produced a live gate of $2,257,155 from 12,671 tickets sold and another 1,390 issued comps.
Spence basked in the glow of his blockbuster win, though the victory lap didn’t last long. The undefeated southpaw suffered extensive injuries sustained in a single car crash less than two week later, having since fully recovered. Spence did not show any lingering effects in his aforementioned victory over Garcia, with the bout serving as the best attended event in the United States since the ongoing coronavirus pandemic which has limited fan attendance in venues around the country.
It also illustrates the ability to draw regardless of circumstance, producing a larger gate for the Dec. 5th show than in his previous outing despite the limitations in place due to social distancing measures.
The majority of stateside boxing events since last June have taken place behind closed doors.
Top Rank has staged all of its post-pandemic shows in Las Vegas, with all but two disallowing fans in attendance—and even the two exceptions coming in front of intimate, invitation-only crowds.
Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) has split its shows between Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut for its Showtime-televised cards, and various venues in Los Angeles for its content on Fox Sports platforms. Two of its three PPV shows in that span served as the exceptions—Spence’s win over Garcia in Arlington, Texas; and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ 6th round knockout of Leo Santa Cruz atop their Oct. 31st Showtime PPV headliner from The Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Davis-Santa Cruz was the first major U.S. televised card to take place with fans in attendance since the pandemic. The event produced a live gate of $1,466,475 from 7,891 tickets sold along with another 747 issued comps. The onsite total for the evening was 9,024.
Spence-Garcia outpaced another Texas-sized boxing blockbuster event, which marked the ring return of pound-for-pound king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (54-1-2, 36KOs).
A 13-month ring break ended with Alvarez’s 12-round virtual shutout of Callum Smith to claim two super middleweight titles in becoming a legitimate four-division titlist. The Dec. 19th DAZN event aired live from The Alamodome, producing a live gate of $2,303,100 from 11,213 tickets sold, along with another 670 issued comps. Interestingly, the combined attendance figure (11,883) surpasses the 11,426 total announced on fight night.
As for Spence, the win marked his third major attendance pull in his home state in a span of less than three years. The long-reigning welterweight titlist drew an announced crowd of 47,525 for his 12-round shutout of unbeaten Mikey Garcia atop their March 2019 Fox Sports PPV, which also took place at AT&T Center. Nine months prior came a 1st round knockout of Carlos Ocampo, which headlined a Showtime card in front of a sold-out crowd of 12,604 at Ford Center at The Star, the Cowboys’ training center in Frisco, Texas.

Re: Errol Spence Jr. vs. Danny Garcia generates in excess of 250,000 PPV buys
It’s been said repeatedly by boxing fans, media, and people in the game.. charging 75 bucks for these decent fights is ridiculous. Time to rethink paydays, PPV prices, and try to rebuild boxing’s base.
